Our Story
Wadhwani AI came out of a discussion over coffee between Romesh and Sunil Wadhwani – brothers and philanthropists - about their philanthropic work in healthcare and entrepreneurship. They noticed that despite the explosive growth of AI in recent years, the only work being done on AI outside of consumer- or security-facing big tech, was by academic research institutions scattered around the world. Keeping this in mind, their main focus was to find a way to harness the power of AI to aid in sectors such as education, agriculture and healthcare.
Meanwhile, P Anandan had returned to India in 2005 to found Microsoft Research India (MSR India), with the goal of combining India’s world-class talent and growing interest in the world of social development with Microsoft Research’s focus on applying advanced technology to change lives. When approached by the Wadhwani brothers, Anandan saw an opportunity to take his work at MSR India to the next level, leveraging powerful AI technology to tackle problems that weren’t currently being successfully addressed.
The brothers thus founded the Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence (Wadhwani AI), and elected Anandan to head it, to create a hub that would connect the organizations working on India’s most pressing problems with the world’s most accomplished AI researchers, to engineer a revolution in how we approach and solve the most critical unmet needs of people everywhere.
