This Republic Day, we are reminded that the true strength of a nation lies in how inclusively it upholds dignity, rights, and opportunities for all.

At Bahaal Foundation, our work with persons with spinal cord injuries is rooted in the belief that inclusion is not charity — it is a right. A truly strong Republic ensures that no one is left behind.

As we celebrate the values of justice, equality, and freedom, we renew our commitment to building a more accessible and compassionate society.

Over the past weeks at the Serai Residency Fellowship, our founder, Sijo Varghese, has had the opportunity to pause, reflect, and share his journey, a journey shaped profoundly by his life with a spinal cord injury.

It was here that Sijo opened up about how the Bahaal Foundation came into being: born from resilience, shaped by lived experience, and driven by the vision of restoring freedom, dignity, and hope for people with spinal cord injuries.

During the fellowship, Sijo has been developing Mind Over Matter, a psychosocial support project that aims to strengthen mental health, build peer networks, and empower individuals navigating life after a spinal cord injury.

The serene environment of the residency offered him the calm and clarity to think more deeply, allowing the project to grow with greater intention and depth.

Meaningful interactions with other fellows, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences, have helped him expand the project, adding components that make it more holistic, inclusive, and impactful.

The Serai Fellowship has not only nurtured a project but also strengthened a purpose: to create a community where no one has to walk their journey alone.

World Spinal Cord Injury Day 2025

Theme: Fall Prevention, Spinal Cord Protection

Spinal cord injury changes lives in an instant, often leaving lasting physical, emotional, and social challenges. This year’s theme reminds us that many injuries can be prevented through simple measures, such as being mindful of safety at home, on the road, and at work. Fall prevention is not only about protecting ourselves, but also about safeguarding the dignity and independence of those we care for.

At the same time, we must work towards greater awareness, integration, and inclusion. People living with spinal cord injuries deserve equal opportunities to learn, work, and participate in community life. By creating accessible environments and breaking down barriers, we can protect not just the spine, but the spirit of those who live with its injuries.

We are thrilled to share this news!

Our project, Spine in Motion, led by our founder Sijo Varghese, has been selected to receive a seed grant from The Pollination Project Foundation to support wheelchair mobility training for individuals with spinal cord injuries.

This initiative was born from lived experience, and driven by the belief that no one should have to rebuild their life alone.

A heartfelt thank you to Kanthari for nurturing the skills that made this dream actionable, and to Sevabharathi Kanyady for generously supporting the pilot in Karnataka. Together, we trained 6 individuals in essential wheelchair mobility skills.

With this momentum, we are moving next to Kerala, in collaboration with Karunya Charitabe Trust for the Disabled, to support more lives in reclaiming independence and dignity.

Thank you to everyone walking with us on this journey. 🙂

An inspiring day at Akkara Foundation in Kasaragod, a beautifully structured, award-winning centre committed to uplifting children with disabilities through holistic medical, psycho-social, educational, and vocational support.

From the moment we stepped in, we were welcomed with warmth and inspired by how dedicated and well-organised the incredible team at Akkara is.

Their vision resonates strongly with that of Bahaal Foundation, both focused on inclusive communities, empowering people with dignity, and offering person-centered interventions for individuals with disabilities.

At just 9 years old, Sijo was an energetic child, full of dreams—until one playful moment led to a devastating fall, a spinal cord injury, and a lifetime in a wheelchair.
The doctors said he wouldn’t walk again.
Society said his life was over.
But one person- a fellow paraplegic — showed him a different path.
