For years, parents have been told to look for a “cure for autism.”

But what if that’s the wrong question to begin with?

“Can you cure autism?” is one of the most common and misunderstood questions.

Dr. Rajarshi Neogi, Neuro-psychiatrist & Academician, addresses this directly with India Autism Center. Because acceptance and support can often matter more than a cure. Understanding this can change how we approach care and inclusion.

India is finally acknowledging what families have long known - early screening matters.

Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan’s call to screen every student is not about labels, but about understanding children early, with dignity and without stigma.

But the gap is alarming.

“With nearly 25 crore students, around 1.2 crore children may require special attention. However, across nearly 600,000 schools, only 21-22 lakh children have been identified so far,” Pradhan said, calling the gap “a serious concern”.

Do you think every child should be screened ?

BCBA Smita, in conversation with India Autism Center , explains how aggression in autism can often worsen when the underlying cause is misunderstood.

Aggression is not always “bad behaviour”

It may be a response to pain, sensory discomfort, anxiety, overwhelm or an unmet need the child cannot yet communicate.

Instead of immediately using physical restraint or blocking, parents/caregivers should observe what’s happening beneath the behaviour:
• What changed? • What triggered it? • What is the child trying to communicate?

When a child feels restricted or unheard, they may respond with even more force.

Understanding the reason behind the behaviour is often the first step toward meaningful support.

Dr. Abir Mukherjee points to a deeper structural gap when it comes to autism diagnosis in women - diagnostic frameworks still built on male presentations, while women are socially conditioned to self-regulate, comply, and conceal. What looks like “coping” is often camouflage.

The result? Recognition comes late, after years of silent adaptation.

At India Autism Center, this calls for a more nuanced lens, one that sees beyond behaviour to the cost of masking.

At the Assisted Living Facility Organisations Consortium (ALFOC), India Autism Center joined a powerful conversation on what dignified, long-term autism care in India can and should look like.

With insights from Ms Neena Wagh (Founder, Alap), Jaishankar Natarajan (CEO, India Autism Center), and Jitendra PS Solanki (Financial Planning), the discussion brought together both lived realities and structural perspectives.

Alongside, panelists Ms Arpita Yadav and Mr Ravi Gupta (Shaurya Foundation), Ms sangeeta jain (Ekya Assisted Living), Col Updesh (PACT Assisted Living), and Ms Kavita Beniwal (Samarth Assisted Living) shared experiences from across the assisted living ecosystem. The session was thoughtfully moderated by Ms Mugdha Kalra

These conversations go beyond dialogue, they shape futures that families think about every single day.

Because for many, this isn’t just about care. It’s about “what happens after us?”
