Earth Day 2026 | Seen through the eyes of children

Today wasn’t about speeches or big promises. It was about children sitting in a circle, sharing what they feel about the Earth. It was about small hands holding colours, drawing trees, rivers, and a future they hope to live in. It was about bending down to pick up waste, not because they were told to, but because they understand it matters.

In their words, the Earth is not something distant. It is where they play, learn, and grow. When they speak about saving water or protecting trees, it comes from a place of honesty and care.

Their involvement changes everything. It turns awareness into action, and action into habit. It reminds us that the responsibility of protecting the planet is not just for tomorrow—it begins now, with them, and with us.

If we truly listen to children, we will realize that the solutions are simple. Respect nature. Use less. Care more.

This Earth Day, we didn’t just celebrate the planet. We learned from those who will inherit it.

Conversations that matter. Voices that push for change.

Yesterday, we were part of an important consultation on Data Management for Labour Trafficking and Bonded Labour at WBNUJS, in collaboration with key institutions and experts from across sectors.

From policymakers and law enforcement to civil society and academia, the room came alive with critical discussions on migration patterns, gaps in data systems, and the urgent need for coordinated action to protect vulnerable workers.

The numbers remind us of the scale — millions of migrant workers across India — but behind every number is a human story that demands dignity, justice, and protection.

Stronger data systems mean stronger accountability. And stronger accountability means a step closer to ending exploitation.

Grateful to be part of a space that is not just discussing problems, but actively shaping solutions.

A classroom, a simple conversation, and children slowly finding their voice—through Jeevan Path, learning becomes more than textbooks; it becomes about expression, confidence, and being heard. In West Bengal, while access to education has improved, true learning begins when children feel safe to think and speak, making this a small yet meaningful step towards SDG 4 on Quality Education and SDG 5 on Gender Equality.

The future is equal, and the change begins with awareness.

On 25th March 2026, Society for People’s Awareness (SPAN) successfully conducted a Gender Awareness Workshop at Bhairab Ganguly College, Kolkata, in observance of International Women’s Day. The session brought together young minds to reflect, question, and understand the realities of gender in today’s world.

Through interactive discussions on gender concepts, roles, equality, feminism, and rights, students actively engaged in conversations that challenged stereotypes and encouraged critical thinking. The workshop created a safe and open space where voices were heard, ideas were shared, and perspectives evolved.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Bhairab Ganguly College, the Women’s Studies Unit, and all faculty members for their support, collaboration, and commitment to creating such meaningful learning spaces for students.

It was inspiring to witness the enthusiasm and participation of students who are ready to build a more just and equal society. SPAN remains committed to empowering youth with knowledge, sensitivity, and the courage to question inequality.

Together, we move one step closer to a future where equality is not just an idea, but a lived reality.

Empowering Women Through Childcare: The West Bengal FORCES Initiative for Informal Sector Workers

In India, nearly 82–94% of working women are employed in the informal sector—over 150 million women engaged in unorganized, insecure jobs like domestic work, home-based tasks, and street vending, often without social security or workplace protection. The lack of affordable and quality crèche or childcare facilities deeply impacts their livelihoods, forcing many to drop out of work, accept lower-paying roles, or reduce working hours, while their children face risks of malnutrition, developmental delays, and unsafe conditions. To address this, the Forum for Crèches and Child Care Services (FORCES) network advocates for universal access to child care, especially for children of informal workers. During the recent West Bengal FORCES State Consultation held on 19th February 2026 in Kolkata, a collective Charter of Demands was formulated with on Ground participation from diverse groups—Tea Garden Workers, Brick Kiln Workers, Domestic Workers, Agri-Labourers, S*x Workers, NGOs, Trade Unions, and media representatives. This Charter will soon be presented to political parties and candidates ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections, urging them to prioritize childcare as a key issue for women’s empowerment and inclusive development.
