⚡ Remembering Michael Faraday — The Father of Electromagnetism

On the birth anniversary of Michael Faraday (1791–1867), the AEE Kolkata IISWBM Chapter pays tribute to one of the greatest pioneers of modern science and engineering.

Faraday’s groundbreaking work on electromagnetic induction, electric motors, generators, and electrochemistry laid the foundations for technologies that continue to power our world today.

His journey reminds us that curiosity, experimentation, and perseverance can transform scientific ideas into innovations that shape society.

🌍 ZERO EMISSIONS DAY | 21 SEPTEMBER 🌱

Today, AEE IISWBM Kolkata Chapter observes Zero Emissions Day - a reminder that the choices we make about energy, mobility and consumption directly influence the environment we share.

🌿 Why Zero Emissions Day?

Zero Emissions Day encourages us to pause and reflect on our dependence on fossil fuels and the emissions associated with everyday activities. The idea is simple: reduce or avoid fossil-fuel-based emissions wherever practical, explore cleaner alternatives, and turn a one-day action into lasting habits.

The initiative aims to raise awareness about greenhouse-gas emissions while encouraging cleaner energy, sustainable transportation, energy efficiency and responsible consumption.

🇨🇦 Where did it begin?

The concept of Zero Emissions Day (ZeDay) originated in Nova Scotia, Canada. Environmental activist Ken Wallace launched a website in 2008, calling for September 21 to be observed as a day focused on avoiding fossil-fuel consumption and giving the planet a temporary “break” from emissions.

What began as a simple idea has developed into an international awareness initiative, with organizations and communities using the day to discuss practical pathways towards lower-emission lifestyles.

⚡ What can we do?

Zero Emissions Day isn't only about one day. It is an opportunity to identify changes that can continue throughout the year:

🚶 Walk or cycle for short journeys
🚌 Choose public transport or shared mobility
☀️ Support renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies
💡 Switch off unnecessary lights and equipment
🔄 Reduce, reuse and recycle
🌱 Make conscious, lower-carbon choices in our daily lives

For engineers, energy professionals, students and future leaders, the message is particularly relevant: the transition to a low-carbon future requires not only technology, but also awareness, innovation and responsible choices.

Let 21 September be more than a date on the calendar.
Let it be a reminder that every reduction in unnecessary emissions is a step towards a cleaner and more sustainable future. 🌏

Mentor–Mentee Programme | Fifth Session Successfully Completed

We are delighted to share that we have successfully completed our first Mentor–Mentee interaction with our distinguished alumnus, Mr. Parthasarathi Thakurta.

Mr. Thakurta is a seasoned Business Development Leader at Greenville Oil & Gas Company Limited, the pioneer domestic LNG production plant in Nigeria dedicated to bridging industrial gas supply gaps and driving energy diversification. Bringing extensive experience in large-scale energy infrastructure and international gas markets, his expertise spans strategic business development, project management, and energy transition initiatives.

We are deeply grateful to Parthasarathi Thakurta for coming forward to support our students and for generously agreeing to mentor mentees in the areas of Business Development, LNG & Gas Markets, and Energy Project Management. Industry Exposure in Energy Storage | AEE IISWBM Visit to Exide Haldia

Experiential learning lies at the core of the AEE IISWBM Student Chapter’s mission. Our students today visited the Exide Industries Limited plant at Haldia for a comprehensive on-site study of advanced battery manufacturing.

The visit offered deep insights into modern manufacturing workflows, high-capacity energy storage assembly, and real-world industrial energy efficiency measures in action.

A special thanks to Exide officials for welcoming our cohort and providing an invaluable operational walkthrough.

Our sincere appreciation goes to Prof. (Dr.) Arindam Dutta, Mr. Bhaskar Roy Choudhury and IISWBM for championing industry-academia synergy and consistently enabling impactful learning platforms for our student community.

We are delighted to share that we have successfully completed our third Mentor–Mentee interaction with our distinguished alumnus, Mr. Barun Kumar.

Mr. Kumar serves as the Director – India and Head of Technical and Business Operations at Overspeed GmbH, a leading German renewable energy consulting firm. With over 8 years of expertise in the grid integration of renewables, he specializes in advanced solar and wind generation forecasting models, real-time energy markets, DSM penalty cost optimization, and the integration of smart grids with green hydrogen storage and electric vehicles.

We are deeply grateful to Barun Kumar for coming forward to support our students and for generously agreeing to mentor mentees in the areas of Renewable Energy Forecasting, Grid Integration, and Green Hydrogen Technologies.
