At Udayan, learning goes beyond classrooms. During their leisure time, our children enthusiastically engage in creative activities—making bags, keychains, greeting cards, files, photo frames, and much more. These moments not only nurture their creativity but also build confidence and life skills.
We are grateful for opportunities like setting up a stall at the Deloitte office, where our children get a platform to showcase their work. Such exposure encourages them, validates their efforts, and inspires them to dream bigger.
Every small creation carries a story of resilience, joy, and hope.

A New Beginning at Udayan
In 2022, we set ourselves a clear goal—to double the number of girls at Udayan.

Today, we take a meaningful step towards that vision with the completion of the first floor of our new girls’ wing.
This new building opens the door for more girls affected by leprosy to access a safe, nurturing space where they can learn, grow, and build their futures.
We have named this building “Teresa Bhavan” inspired by Mother Teresa, who advised Fr. Steven, our Founder, to focus on children from leprosy affected backgrounds – the most marginalised.
More than infrastructure, this is a step forward in expanding care, dignity, and opportunity for every girl at Udayan.

Nutrition is a key pillar of care at Udayan.
Our meals are thoughtfully designed to ensure a balanced intake of carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, and essential micro and macro nutrients.
For many children who come to us with low BMI, improving nutritional status is critical to their growth and overall wellbeing.
To support this, children receive nutrient-rich meals—helping meet their protein needs in a consistent and meaningful way.
Good nutrition not only supports healthy development, it strengthens immunity—enabling children to build resilience and lead healthier lives.

What happens when identity depends on a fingerprint… and you don’t have one?

Across India, a thumb impression is often the simplest way to prove identity—used for accessing services, entitlements, and basic rights.

But for many people affected by leprosy, loss of fingers or damage to their hands makes this impossible.

No fingerprint can mean no verification. No verification can mean no access.

It’s a quiet, often overlooked barrier—one that pushes already vulnerable individuals further to the margins.

Our children have created two beautiful wall magazines—one for the primary group and another for the secondary students. These spaces allow them to express themselves freely through drawings, stories, poems, posters, and anything their imagination inspires.
The primary children proudly present “NaboPallab” (New Leaves)—a reflection of fresh thoughts and budding creativity.
Our secondary students bring out “Kalpataru” (The Wish-Fulfilling Tree)—symbolising ideas, aspirations, and dreams taking shape.
These wall magazines are more than just displays; they are voices of our children—full of imagination, confidence, and expression.

The foundation of learning for our children begins at Udayan Vidyalaya Primary School.
Every year, we welcome children who have never been to school, have had little or no exposure to education, or have experienced school dropout or child labour. With dedicated remedial support and a structured, in-depth learning process with support of appropriate Teaching learning materials, our teachers patiently rebuild their confidence and knowledge.
Step by step, these children are prepared to transition into formal schooling from Class V—ready to continue their educational journey with stronger foundations and renewed hope.

For many children coming from leprosy colonies, life once meant uncertainty—days spent accompanying parents for begging or rag picking, or growing up without proper care and guidance.

At Udayan, this reality changes.

Here, children go to school regularly, receive balanced nutrition, and grow in a safe and caring environment. They explore their interests through extracurricular activities, build confidence, and are supported with vocational training as they grow older.

Over time, we see a quiet but powerful transformation—from vulnerability to stability, from neglect to care, and from limited choices to hopeful possibilities.

A new chapter of learning is unfolding at Udayan Vidyalaya.
With continuous mentoring, motivation, and capacity-building support from our Education Consultant, Dr. Das, our classrooms are becoming more participatory, joyful, and child-friendly. Teachers are no longer only standing in front of the class — they are sitting with the children, learning together, creating Teaching Learning Materials (TLM), and making every lesson more interactive and meaningful.
From classroom arrangements to teaching methods, many positive changes are taking place. The focus has shifted from conventional teaching to a more engaging and inclusive learning process where children feel encouraged to participate, explore, and enjoy education.
Dr. Das, a pioneer in community service and community education, has been deeply involved in strengthening the educational environment at Udayan. His guidance is helping us create a learning space where every child feels confident, connected, and inspired to learn.
At Udayan, education is not only about books — it is about building curiosity, confidence, and joyful learning experiences for every child.

We recently organised a Dental Health Camp at Udayan, in collaboration with College of Medicine & JNM Hospital (COMJNMH).
All 310 children participated, receiving dental check-ups and learning about the importance of oral hygiene. Small steps like these go a long way in ensuring their overall health and wellbeing.
We are grateful for the support that makes such initiatives possible.

We recently held a Parents’ Meet at Udayan for our primary and secondary children—a meaningful opportunity to connect, listen, and share.
Our team sat with parents to discuss each child’s journey so far—academics, behaviour, wellbeing, and participation beyond the classroom. It was also a space to reflect on the collective effort it takes to support and nurture every child’s growth.
These conversations remind us that when caregivers and educators walk together, children thrive.

On the occasion of Bengali New Year, our children at Udayan celebrated the day with creativity and joy
The younger ones expressed the festive spirit through drawings, the middle group contributed to a ‘Green Udayan Campus’ through plantation, and the seniors created posters on social issues displayed across the campus.
It was a day of learning, expression, and togetherness.
Wishing everyone a Happy Bengali New Year!
