Building Burnout Resilience, Collective Care and Community Wellbeing
Over the past two days, Kolkata Anandam for Equality and Justice (KAEJ) brought together mental health professionals, feminist and q***r movement leaders, community organizers, frontline defenders, and grassroots activists to collectively reflect on one of the most pressing challenges facing our communities today—burnout.
Drawing from the learnings of the Webs of Safety and Care initiative, the workshop created a space for storytelling, critical reflection, and dialogue on the intersections of mental health, activism, gender, livelihood, trauma, and care. Through participatory discussions and case studies, participants explored how burnout is shaped not only by individual experiences but also by broader systems of inequality, exclusion, and violence.
The workshop focused on co-creating a community-led training module that is practical, accessible, and rooted in lived experiences. Together, participants examined questions of emotional labour, leadership fatigue, collective responsibility, peer support, and the importance of building sustainable cultures of care within our movements.
As we move forward, we remain committed to strengthening networks of solidarity, creating spaces for healing and rest, and developing tools that support the wellbeing of those who continue to lead, care, and advocate for justice every day.
