*Severe Weather Crisis: Torrential Rains Trigger Widespread Flooding in NSW"Australia*

As of May 22, 2025, the Mid North Coast and Hunter regions of NSW are experiencing major flooding. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued severe weather warnings for heavy rainfall, with some areas receiving over 300 mm of rain. The towns of Taree, Kempsey, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, and Bellingen are among the hardest hit, with rivers like the Manning, Paterson, Hastings, and Macleay overflowing their banks.

* Impact and Rescue Efforts*
Fatalities and Missing Persons: Three individuals have been confirmed dead, including 63-year-old David Knowles from Moto, who tragically lost his life after assisting others. One person remains missing.

Rescues: Over 500 people have been rescued, with 22 individuals airlifted by helicopter, including 18 from flooded homes and roads, and four from a bridge.

Evacuations and Isolation: Approximately 50,000 residents have been advised to prepare for evacuation or face potential isolation due to rising floodwaters.

Infrastructure Damage: More than 100 schools have closed, and thousands of homes are without power. Road closures and landslides have further complicated evacuation and rescue operations.

Under LRS, Indian residents can remit up to $250,000 per financial year abroad.

A 5% Tax Collected at Source (TCS) is levied on foreign remittances above ₹7 lakh in a financial year.

TCS is refundable or adjustable when filing income tax returns.

This does NOT apply to NRIs remitting money into India.

Indians in America may face higher costs for remittances. A proposed US tax could significantly increase their financial burden. This levy impacts green card and H1B visa holders. India's remittance inflows have surged in recent years. The US has become a major source of these funds. The new tax could cost Indians over USD 1.6 billion annually.

The cost for Indians in the US sending money back home will rise, with their total annual outgo is likely to cross USD 1.6 billion as the Trump administration plans to impose a 5 per cent tax on outward remittances. The estimated outgo is based on data for the 2023-24 period compiled from a recent RBI article.

In President Donald Trump's big priority bill, there is a proposal for a 5 per cent excise tax on remittance transfers that would cover more than 40 million people, including those holding green cards and H1B visas. The proposed levy won't be applicable for US citizens.

India's remittances have more than doubled from USD 55.6 billion in 2010-11 to USD 118.7 billion in 2023-24, according to a recent article published in the Reserve Bank's March Bulletin.
