Birth Certificate Now Mandatory for Voters!
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued key directives to curb duplicate entries in the electoral rolls. As part of this, a birth certificate will now be mandatory to verify the date of birth for those applying to be included in the electoral rolls.
This requirement applies to individuals born on or after July 1, 1987. The aim is to ensure accuracy and eliminate fake entries in the voter list.
This rule was first introduced as part of the Second Revision of Photo Electoral Rolls (SRPER) in 2003. However, the ECI has now decided to enforce it more strictly.
According to the order:
Anyone born on or after July 1, 1987, must provide a birth certificate issued by a competent authority to be added to the electoral rolls.
Other documents (like Aadhaar or school certificates) will not be accepted as proof of age for those born on or after December 2, 2004.
From 2003 onwards, the Commission has been gradually implementing this rule, but due to increasing instances of age fraud and fake entries, it is now being enforced strictly.
To maintain the integrity of the electoral rolls and prevent fraudulent entries by confirming the correct date of birth through authentic documentation.
