On this National Farmers Day 2024 CPF continues to be committed to delivering smart solutions to sustainable food security and resilence. This Farmer’s Day, let’s commit to supporting and empowering our farmers for a better tomorrow. CPF salutes farmers like Laxmikanta Sardar whose efforts laid the Seeds of Change: to a Better Harvest with SARP ( System of Assured Rice Production ) method in Ranibandh area of West Bengal
Ranibandh, located in the southern region of Bankura district in West bengal, is predominantly inhabited by Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities from Santhals and Bhumij. The primary livelihood sources are agriculture and Non-Timber Forest Produce (NTFP). Despite their dependence on mono-crop cultivation of paddy during the Kharif season, the area's rainfed and sloping terrain creates significant challenges, including seedbed preparation, seedling transplantation, and irrigation, all of which are heavily reliant on the monsoon. In 2023, CPF introduced the System of Assured Rice Production (SARP) method in the Ranibandh area to address these challenges. Demonstration plots were established to showcase the suitability of this method for the region's climate and geography.
Laxmikanta Sardar, a farmer from Sindriam village under Barikul Panchayat, had long relied on traditional methods for paddy cultivation. Since 2023, CPF has been facilitating meetings and awareness programs on the SARP method, and Laxmikanta was one of the enthusiastic farmers who actively participated in these sessions. His keen interest in experimenting with this method led to remarkable changes in his farming practices. While he followed the prescribed seed treatment, land preparation, and nursery setup, he faced challenges with line sowing due to the labor-intensive nature of the process. As a result, he applied the SARP method on only 17 kathas (less than 1 bigha) of his land and continued traditional methods on the rest. Over time, Laxmikanta realized the benefits of the SARP method. He could w**d the SARP plot independently using a w**der, whereas the traditional plot required 8–10 laborers for manual w**ding. At harvest, he recorded a yield of 5.8 quintals from the SARP plot compared to 5.2 quintals from the traditional plot. Additionally, the SARP plot experienced fewer pest attacks, resulting in better seed quality. Convinced by these results, Laxmikanta decided to adopt the method fully in the next Kharif season and motivated other farmers to do the same. In the next Kharif season, 19 farmers implemented the SARP method across 14 bighas of land. They also adopted other agro-ecological practices such as seed sorting, seed treatment, the use of bio-fertilizers and pesticides, and timely w**ding. Farmers like Amiya Sardar and Motilal Sardar noted the benefits of the method, stating, “It is different from the traditional method. We have noticed that straws are more and less wasted because of the spacing. If weather remains favorable, we are expecting a very good yield.” The adoption of the SARP method has expanded to other villages in Ranibandh, where farmers are now anticipating better yields and improved livelihoods. National Farmer’s Day, or Kisan Diwas, is celebrated every year on 23rd December to honor the immense contributions of farmers to the nation.

Diwali marks a special time for the Raj Gond and Kolam communities in the Adilabad forest area of Telangana as they celebrate the unique Dandari-Ghusadi festival. For the Raj Gonds, this festival is a way to appease the Fire God and ensure a bountiful harvest.
When is it celebtarted?
The Dandari-Gussadi festival is celebrated in the months of October and November, during the Deepavali season. The festival begins on the day of a crescent moon and ends on the dark moon day.
Significance: The Gussadi dance is named after the peacock which is a sacred bird to the Raj Gond. The dancers wear elaborate costumes made of peacock feather and they imitate the movement of peacock.Through dance they connect with their god and celebrate the beauty of nature.
How is it celebrated?
Celebrations begin with a visit to the Padmalpuri Khako shrine in Gudirevu village, where Adivasis honor the river with offerings. This shrine is spiritually significant, and they return at the festival’s end.
The festival features the worship of Yethmasurpen and God Jangu Bai, with instruments like Dappu and Dhol, while rhythmic drumming and lively dances fill the air as participants wear colorful costumes, peacock feather turbans, and deer horn.

We at the Centre for People's Forestry are deeply saddened by the passing of Padma Shri Kanaka Raju, a prominent Gussadi dancer and cultural icon from Marlavai village in Jainoor, Komaram Bheem Asifabad district. With over 60 years of dedication, he passionately promoted this unique art form, which is integral to the tribal way of life.
The Gussadi dance, performed during the Dandari festival that begins after Deepavali and continues for 10 days, showcases dancers adorned in vibrant costumes and wearing caps made of around 1,500 peacock feathers, embodying the spirit of their rich cultural heritage.
His demise is a profound loss for the cultural landscape and the folk arts community. Kanaka Raju's passion and commitment inspired many and enriched our heritage.
On behalf of the CPF Trustees and team, we extend our heartfelt condolences to all who were touched by his remarkable spirit.
Rest in peace, Kanaka Raju. Your legacy will forever resonate within our hearts and communities.
