Gig workers’ body writes to labour ministry to mandate heatwave protection

“Heat protection is a basic human right of millions of workers powering the platform economy. We want this issue to be looked at through a human lens,” said Shaik Salauddin, national general secretary, Indian Federation Of App Based Transport Workers (IFAT), adding that countries like South Korea, Singapore, France, and Japan have such protections and India should follow.

New Delhi, April 26 (IANS) As scorching temperatures grip large parts of India, a national body representing gig and platform workers has urged the government to introduce enforceable heatwave protections.

Today, I had a productive meeting with the Secretary of the Labour Department, Ms. Salma K. Fahim, IAS, at Vikasa Soudha. On behalf of the Indian Federation Of App Based Transport Workers (IFAT), we submitted a formal representation focusing on the effective implementation of the Gig Workers Welfare Board.

​The key priorities highlighted in our letter include:
​Transparency: Ensuring public disclosures of board decisions and meeting minutes.
Inclusive Consultations: Organizing structured dialogues with worker unions and stakeholders.

Registration and Grievances: Immediate operationalization of mechanisms for worker registration and dispute redressal. Social Security: Prioritizing health insurance, accident coverage, and pension schemes.

Robust IT Architecture: Building a user-friendly digital infrastructure for seamless data management and benefit disbursement.

Facilitation Centers: Establishing on-ground support centers to assist workers with welfare schemes.

We are committed to ensuring that the intent of the legislation translates into tangible benefits for every platform worker in Karnataka.

TGPWU and IFAT urged both the Central and State governments to closely monitor the situation and ensure uninterrupted LPG and CNG supply in urban centres. They also appealed to aggregator companies to support workers through transparent communication and to avoid imposing penalties for service disruptions beyond their control.
