On November 14th, the Business & Finance Society team had the opportunity to visit the NEDFi House located in Dispur. The North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (NEDFi) is one of the most respected and trusted development institutions in the North Eastern Region of India. Established to support the region's economic growth, it was founded under the leadership of Dr. Jayanta Madhab and was created with a clear mission to accelerate economic development in the North Eastern Region.
During the visit, we were welcomed by HR, Jumita Saikia, and were then attended to by the heads of the Product Finance Department(PFD) and the Micro and Small Enterprise (MSE) Department, who provided insights into their respective departments. The PFD deals with lending amounts exceeding ₹3 crore, while the MSE Department focuses on financing and developing businesses with investments of less than ₹3 crore. They discussed the lending process and requirements, highlighting the differences between NEDFi's approach and traditional banking systems, as they approve lending based on a committee-approved process.
It was enlightening to learn about the various functions of different departments within NEDFi. The composition of lending to different sectors in the NE region reveals a significant focus on the hospitality and tourism sector, followed by the healthcare sector, among others. NEDFi introduced us to various initiatives, including the Rupee Term Loan (RTL)and North East Entrepreneur's Development Scheme (NEEDS), among others.
A session on venture capital by Mr. Nickson Sharma was the most enriching experience of the day. He shared valuable insights from their ₹100 crore fund investments in startups spanning technology to hospitality. He shared nuances and tricks to learn more about venture capital, introducing us to this sector.
Overall, it was an enriching enriching experience for us to learn and gain a first-hand understanding of NEDFi's pivotal role and its importance in our North-eastern region's economic growth and development.
