United Mission Society (UMS) is an voluntary development
internationally recognised
non-governmental organization, established in New Delhi in JUN 2001,
having it’s headquarter and ragisted in Gorakhpur,
Pardesh,
Today UMS is present in 10 States of India and has extended its reach beyond
national borders to Nepal. The organisation is committed to integrated
health and Envirmant development iss
ues in the context of poverty, gender
and rights with life cycle approach. Its driving mission to empower the
underserved and marginalized individuals and communities through gender
sensitive participatory processes, for achieving optimal and sustainable
health and development. engaged with community development issues across eastern Uttar Pradesh and
is actively
northern Bihar. Conceptualized and set up in 2001, UMS had always been
involved in a number of development issues and social sector campaigns
(mostly education, disaster and health related) and enjoyed excellent
community support in organizing such programs through local contribution. During the initial period of UMS the focus was on health and education
sector programs, such as nutrition support, child and mother health, quality
child education etc. With growing understanding of local situation and
development dynamics, the organization took up deeper issues as its thrust
area. The recurring floods of the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh were
identified as the
root cause of the plight of the people of this area. Therefore, UMS
addressed the issue starting with relief distribution, gradually shifting to
flood management and successfully experimented the issues of flood
vulnerability reduction of the people by providing them credit assistance to
shift their livelihood in non flood vulnerable areas. Later it expanded to
other sectors like multiple disaster mitigation and management. The
intricate issues like economic uplifting of poor through sustainable
agriculture and reclamation of sodic land and recharging of ground water has
