Our shared commitment to creating empowering and joyful children’s libraries across the Northeast continues 💛

Children’s libraries and a strong culture of reading are essential to a child’s holistic development. Reading creates safe and joyful spaces where young minds can freely explore, imagine, and grow with confidence.

On 28-30 May, we launched the Roots to Branches Training Series 2026–28 with a 2.5-day workshop, ‘Libraries: Enabling Them for Everyone,’ at the ant campus in Chirang, Assam. Facilitated by Bookworm Trust in collaboration with R2B.

22 library practitioners, youth leaders, and community workers from 13 organizations across Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Assam participated in this workshop where they explored practical facilitation skills to make libraries inclusive and empowering spaces for every child.

On 21st–22nd May 2026, participants from 20 organisations across Sikkim came together in Gangtok for a state consultation on understanding the emerging development issues facing communities and the voluntary sector ecosystem. Conversations spanned across education, community health, gender equality, child protection, and ecology and livelihoods — offering a grounded picture of Sikkim's voluntary sector.

For many, it felt like a long-overdue gathering — and the room left with one unanimous call: we need more of this.

This consultation was organised by Roots to Branches Foundation in collaboration with Sikkim Development Foundation and Progressive Learning Foundation, with the support of Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT).

What does it take to develop a project proposal rooted in ground realities? In this module, the second cohort of the Future Ready Leaders (FRL) Fellowship set out to explore that. From 28th April to 2nd May, 19 FRL fellows gathered at the ant Campus in Chirang to learn about project development under this Fellowship.

The module started with an introduction to the ant's journey and the work it has been doing, offering an inspiring backdrop to the learning ahead. Sessions on gender and sexuality added an important layer to how fellows understand the contexts they work in.

Fellows explored different project development tools and visited villages in Chirang to collect information through Participatory Learning and Action — putting into practice what was learnt inside the training halls for this module. This was concluded with pitches and presentations, with feedback from a jury of mentors and peers.

With this module complete, fellows now carry the skills needed to turn their ideas into action in their communities and work areas, thereby paving ways for their dream projects.

On 21st–22nd April 2026, 28 organisations from 12 districts of Nagaland came together for a state consultation on understanding the key development issues facing communities, the voluntary sector, and its ecosystem. Conversations moved between lived realities of communities they work with, good practices rooted in those communities and challenges faced, and a shared search for how civil society and government can work together.

This was the third in our series of State Consultations across the Northeast. This consultation was organised by Roots to Branches Foundation in collaboration with Northeast Initiative Development Agency (NEIDA), Pro Rural India, Prodigal's Home, and Sisterhood Network.

Every flood season in Assam, the same question resurfaces - are the right resources and support reaching the right people? In order to address this, district-level convenings on Community Feedback Mechanism (CFM) and Flood Preparedness were held across five districts in Assam - Darrang, Cachar, Jorhat, Dhemaji, and Goalpara. Bringing together 182 participants from 65 organisations, the meetings created space for representatives of District Inter-Agency Group (IAG), District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), and civil society organisations to strengthen coordination between stakeholders, review existing feedback practices, and begin laying the groundwork for formal CFM systems.

These convenings were organised by District Lead IAGs and Roots to Branches Foundation and with the support of UNICEF Assam.
