“TENDONG AWARD”
The Prestigious Tendong Award: Honouring Excellence in the Lepcha Community
The Tendong Award stands as the highest civilian honour conferred by the Lepcha community of Sikkim in recognition of individuals who have made lifetime contributions towards the development, preservation, and promotion of Lepcha heritage in diverse fields such as language, literature, education, culture, environmental conservation, social service, and community leadership.
Formally instituted in July, 2013 in Gangtok, the award was conceptualized and established jointly by the three apex Lepcha organizations of the State: Renjyong Mutanchi Rong Tarjum Renjyong Mutanchi Ringmom Kurmom (Sikkim Lepcha Literary Organization), and Renjyong Mutanchi Rong Ong Shejum or Sikkim Lepcha Youth Association. The initiative was spearheaded by dedicated community leaders Ren Tar Tshering Lepcha, Ren Tom Tshering Lepcha, and Ren S.D. Tshering, whose efforts were instrumental in streamlining the award structure and bringing it into reality.
The need for such an honour arose from the desire to formally recognize and celebrate those individuals whose sustained efforts have left a profound impact on the Lepcha community and identity. The Tendong Award, named after the sacred Tendong Hill—central to Lepcha mythology and spirituality—embodies the values of resilience, reverence, and pride in indigenous heritage.
Presented annually during the Tendong Lho Rum Faat Festival on the 8th of August, the award includes a citation, certificate, a commemorative memento, and a Silver and gold Medal engraved with Mayal Kumshe, the mythical paradise of the Lepchas measuring 3 inch diameter 5mm width, 105 gram silver and 5.8 gram gold 24 carat and a total weight of 110.8 gram. The recipient is chosen by an independent and impartial Award Committee, ensuring transparency and integrity in the selection process.
