📚 Research Spotlight | Tohri Foundation

We are delighted to share the publication of a significant research paper by Dr. Anandajit Goswami, Dr. Preeti Singh, and Dr. Atul Kumar titled:
“Interlinkages between Energy Inequality, Nonlinear Transition Dynamics, and Progress across India, South Asia, and the World: A Multidimensional Approach.”

The study challenges conventional assumptions about energy transitions and highlights how access to clean cooking energy is shaped not only by income but also by deep structural inequalities and complex social dynamics. Using empirical evidence from India, the research demonstrates that energy inequality remains a critical barrier to inclusive development and sustainable progress.

For the first time in the context of rural India, the study provides evidence that cooking energy transitions can be nonlinear and may exhibit chaotic patterns across time and space due to complex local socioeconomic realities. This challenges the conventional assumption that households move smoothly from traditional to modern fuels as incomes rise.

The findings call for more equitable and multidimensional policy approaches to ensure that energy transitions leave no community behind.
