We Protect What We Love, and this starts with CARE. ❤️💚🙌 Waste Warriors (est. 2009) Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, India
started as mountain cleaners, tackling waste in the Himalayan region. The starting catalyst was initially to keep waste off the trails and out of the environment. Programs include their model ward program for ‘segregation at source’ and community waste awareness; the clean business program; and zero waste destination program. WW has now expanded to collect waste materials across Dharamshala, Dehradun and in Corbett National Park. .

The soothing sound is right, but the painful visual is wrong. 🤯 We care about Himalayan rivers and streams, these are the lifeblood of the mountains and all the inhabitants -people, plants, and animals- they maintain 🌏💚🏔

Interview with Sonam, Environmental Coordinator at the Tibetan Settlement Office, Clean Upper Dharamshala Program. This initiative is one of the longest running waste initiatives in the region, catalized in 1989 when the Dalai Lama won the Noble Peace Prize. In his speech he emphasized the theme of ‘universal responsibility,’ which prompted the Tibetan community to take responsibility for the environment in their home in exile in India.
The Clean Upper Dharamshala Project focuses on community engagement and outreach, through initiatives like cleanups; waste collection; an environmental education center; a recycled paper workshop; water refilling stations (minimises plastic bottles); environmental volunteers; composting sites; school programs; tree planting; etc. 💚🌲🌏

Candid moments in the field. 💦☺️ Water quality testing for micro plastics and other pollutants. On the road we’ve also been collecting soil and water samples from Himalayan rivers and streams to assess the environmental impact of pollutants in this region. The rivers and streams are the pulse of vitality that nourishes these regions; if they are direly polluted, then how fair the people? 🤓💚💧

‘And then there’s all that plastic. Studies have shown that increasing amounts of plastic “marine litter” are being deposited on the seafloor everywhere from coastal areas to deep basins, and even in the Arctic. Wind, sun, and waves grind down large-scale plastic artifacts, leaving the seas full of microscopic plastic particles that will eventually rain down on the ocean floor, creating a layer that could persist for geological timescales.’ (Adam Frank on the Anthropocene long-scale impact of plastics https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/04/are-we-earths-only-civilization/557180/?utm_campaign=the-atlantic&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook) .

Plastic audits should really start in the shops and supermarkets. Whatever you see packaged in plastic, really doesn’t have a good plan B, it will either be thrown in nature, burned, buried, or (rarely) downcycled. Alternatives to plastic -practices as well as materials- is the only ecological way forward 🏔✨💚
