The National Democratic Party of Tibet at a glance

The National Democratic Party of Tibet is the brainchild of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, who has single-handedly spearheaded the transition to a semblance of democracy from a prevailing system of theocracy with the ultimate goal of converting the fledgling democracy to a full-fledged party-based democratic system. With patronage of His Holin

ess the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Youth Congress founded the National Democratic Party of Tibet on 2nd September 1994, and initially provided the necessary finance to fund a head office. The inaugural meeting of the National Democratic Party of Tibet was presided over by the then speaker of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile, Professor Samdung Rinpoche. In a written speech conveyed at the opening ceremony, His Holiness the Dalai Lama expressed that the founding of a political party such as the National Democratic Party of Tibet will go a long way in the evolution of Tibetan democracy to its logical conclusion, and it will set a precedent for future political parties to emerge. In the preceding years, the National Democratic Party of Tibet has taken on the task of creating awareness for the masses and launched campaign drive for members of the parliament for 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th Assembly of Tibetan Peoples’ Deputies. Since 2001, when the Tibetan charter was amended with a clause for direct election of a Kalon Tripa (Prime Minister), the National Democratic Party of Tibet took active participation in the subsequently 1st, 2nd and 3rd Kalon Tripa elections, and adhered to canvass and campaigns prerogative of a matured political party. The National Democratic Party of Tibet has to its credit, as a result of massive campaigns, the distinction of getting all its prime ministerial candidates elected for a third time on the trot. Moreover, candidates fielded by the National Democratic Party of Tibet for the Tibetan Parliament in Exile has fared extremely well during the election battles. Furthermore, the current Kalon Tripa elected in 2011, who is now courteously titled as The Sikyong, was our prime minister candidate as well. In the same year of its establishment, the National Democratic Party of Tibet convened its first national convention to elect members of the executive. In 1996, during the second national convention, 2nd executive members were elected. In 2000, 3rd executive members were duly elected during the 3rd national convention. The 4th executive members were elected during the 4th national convention in 2004. The 5th executive members were elected in the year 2008 during its 5th national convention. In 2012, when the National Democratic Party of Tibet convened a plenary session for its 6th national convention,
