Since 1991, HOPE foundation has been serving men, women and children in urban slums, villages affected by natural disasters and families living on the fringes of society. Experience has shown, the possibilities for impact are enhanced when efforts are comprehensive and concentrated.
A partnership between the government of Delhi and HOPE foundation it resulted in hundreds of families from The Village of HOPE, in New Delhi, going from begging for a living to standing on their own feet. It resulted in constructing 800 homes for the poor on about nine acres of land made available by the government. Most of the residents now manage small businesses or work. Their children are in school or college. Many are finding jobs on merit and are not condemned to a lifetime of begging.
The colonies where they live are full of cell-phones, small enterprises, schools, training centers and production units. In several locations, we have seen that a school, Skills development unit or a health center can be the focal point in helping the community make the climb out of poverty or change behavior patterns.
Their older children, who may not have been a part of the education system, when HOPE foundation first stepped into the community, are now pursuing college degrees, gaining jobs, engaged in various income generation activities.
Since Peb and HOPE are keen to have influence change within communities, our submission is to explore the feasibility of a designing a dynamic, multi-pronged initiative to address needs around the existing health care centers (two).
Health Care Center:
This could be brought to life through a ‘PEB Center of HOPE’ that functions as health care centers and development unit. The health care centers will focus on providing free bandaging to the leprosy affected patients in Tahirpur leprosy colony, Delhi. A sustained effort will bring about change, help individuals to gain a healthier and hygiene lives and start a journey down a path that will allow them to be transformed well within one generation and live healthier.
Methodology:
To realize our goal of providing health care services, we intend to use a four-pronged strategy.
1. Make use of existing service centers in the village of HOPE
2. Employ community development workers to reach out to potential beneficiaries and opinion leaders.
3. Engage young men and women by creating a learning environment that facilitates intellectual growth.
4. Enlist support to assist the patient to educate them to take care of themselves. Steps 1-4 will be repeated on an on-going basis to ensure that momentum is sustained throughout the period of the program. In our quest to be culturally sensitive, we will engage men and women (as doctor and bandagers), to be best positioned to reach out to individuals and communities that find greater comfort in settings that make them feel secure
Objective:
The objective is to help the patients obtain free wound care from our clinics. Since they may already be having various physical challenges to go to the government hospitals due to disfigurements of their body parts and also they are associated with social stigma due to which they are deprived from the society. The health care centers shall be homely place as it is existed right in their community.
Volunteering:
HOPE foundation encourages employee volunteerism. We believe it must offer joy through purposeful work. Where possible it should include people to people contact. We have seen volunteers enjoy themselves as they let down their guard while engaging with beneficiaries and one another. As they establish direct contact with the people they tend to obtain perspective as they reflect on a world that may or may not be very different from theirs.
Over the last two decades, volunteers have strengthened our work by offering their intellectual capital to design databases, tweak policy manuals, paint murals, build benches, bridges and boundary walls, play sport etc.
We continue to see a need for all the opportunities mentioned above as well as for mentors, creative writers, photographers and artists. HOPE foundation would also like to increase its social media presence, start chess clubs, direct students towards athletics, field hockey, swimming, badminton etc. The partnership between PEB and HOPE could be a launch pad for ongoing volunteering initiatives throughout the year. All we need is for the PEB volunteers to reach the site, post which all the logistics will be taken care of by HOPE foundation.
Improvement Planning:
The leadership team will ensure an appropriate sense of balance and participation at all levels – doctor and bandagers, administrators, program coordinators, the finance department and senior management. Information (photographs, stories and statistics) will be included in an annual report. The management team has vast and proven problem solving ability. They will use their experience to give constructive feedback on issues such as internal management, management of the project, of relationships with key stake holders, as well as issues related to finance and administration. The senior leadership team would also be responsible for, training, governance, compliance, communication, reporting, monitoring and evaluation, leading and motivating the staff. Accountants and administrators will oversee synchronization of accounts, collection of vouchers, data entry, reporting, disbursal of salaries, maintaining PF, medical reimbursements, insurance, leave details, internal and external audits, Board meetings etc.
The Journey Ahead:
India has never been short on dreams. A century ago, Tagore talked about the kind of nation that India should awake to, free of divisions, shaking off its discontents and forever looking outward. Nehru spoke passionately about India’s tryst with destiny. The poor have seen the green; white and IT revolution pass them by. At this vital turning point, of history, health care services will open the door wider and empower more people to live healthy lives. The newfound push on health care service could help those deprived people to live a better live.
