🩸 Blood Donation Awareness: Why Hospitals Sometimes Ask for “Any Blood Group” and Sometimes a “Specific Blood Group”

Many people ask why hospitals sometimes request any blood group donors and sometimes a specific blood group. Here is the simple medical explanation:

🩸 Packed Red Blood Cells (PRBCs)
These contain red blood cells and must be ABO and Rh compatible with the patient. They can be stored in blood banks for about 35–42 days, so hospitals usually maintain stock and request donors of different blood groups to keep supplies ready.

🩸 White Blood Cells (Granulocyte Transfusion)
These are used very rarely and have a very short shelf life (about 24 hours). Because they cannot be stored, hospitals may request a specific donor quickly, usually matching the patient’s blood group.

🩸 Platelets
Platelets help prevent bleeding and are stored only for about 5 days. Ideally, same blood group platelets are preferred, but compatible different blood group platelets can also be used if needed.

🩸 Plasma (Fresh Frozen Plasma)
Plasma contains clotting factors and antibodies. ABO-compatible plasma is required, though exact matching may not always be necessary in emergencies.

⚠️ Important:
For conditions like severe dengue or critical bleeding, doctors may prefer same blood group platelets or plasma, but life-saving transfusions should never be delayed due to blood group availability.
