Mahira Foundation Mahira is an Urdu name meaning Expert, Adept, Skilled, Acquainted, and Accomplished.

Mahira Foundation functions as a multi-faceted cultural agency that specialises in helping museums, archives and cultural institutions such as public and private collections understand their strengths, identify opportunities and work in new ways. We are located in one of New Delhi’s most magnificent historic districts, Purani Dilli or Old Delhi, where the past and present seamlessly coalesce and b

ecome a spectacle.

It was in the year 2016 when the vision of Mahira was brought to life by a group of young professionals with expertise in diverse fields related to education, art, and culture. The founding members envisaged creating an organization of a national repute, dedicated to empower and educate, diverse groups and communities through artistic and pedagogical interventions. Mahira Foundation functions as a multi-faceted cultural agency that specializes in helping museums, archives and cultural institutions such as public and private collections understand their strengths, identify opportunities and work in new ways. Our services comprise Research, Documentation, Archiving, Collection Management, Conservation, Exhibitions, and Project Development. We assist museums and cultural institutions to increase the public benefit of their assets - their people, their collections, their buildings, their skills, their networks, and their knowledge.

As a part of our initiative, we also organize public engagement activities such as heritage walks, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, seminars, education, and outreach programs. We believe that with the help of these pedagogical tools we can promote and facilitate artistic and socio-cultural learning experiences among individuals. Mahira is constantly growing and extending its reach in allied fields such as consultancy, digital marketing as well as, one of its kind, the heritage online store.

History is made/crafted through collaboration. As historian Raphael Samuel notes in one of his seminal works 'Theatres of Memory', the creation of history is a process that includes a thousand different hands’. Institutions like museums and archives are troves of our shared past, collective memories, and heritage. As advocates/facilitators of heritage interpretation - fair representation, we acknowledge that cultural institutions like museums and archives should be built through collaborating with different stakeholders such as other cultural organizations, communities, and common people. After all, we humans, inherently share a familiar/common/collective sense of the past. Therefore, at Mahira, we extend collaborations to a wide range of actors such as educators, art managers, curators, consultants, and many more.

Mahira Foundation team members are not only experienced consultants but have also served at museums, archives, and art galleries as curators, collection managers, conservators, designers, development officers, and educators. The team has extensive knowledge of art and culture and is committed to continuing professional development fuelled by their full potential, capabilities, and good work ethics. Our most discerning feature is that we focus the lacuna on the dissemination of knowledge to common people. Our strategies for building museums and archives are bespoke, keeping in mind the diverse nature of our clients.

Mahira Foundation emerges as a platform and the one-stop solution to all services in the field. This foundation aims to disseminate art to people of all kinds and backgrounds. Thus, it will play a major role not only in enriching the project that has been taken by the team but also in the overall enrichment of the arts in the wider spectrum.

Mahira team with Rani Manjushree of Bhadrajun Fort, Rajasthan

From the very beginning, the royal family of Bhadrajun has been deeply involved in this heritage project — guiding its vision, providing valuable feedback, and personally visiting the reserve stores to review progress.

Their collaboration with the Mahira Foundation has been more than just supportive; it has been a shared journey of storytelling and cultural preservation. Through personal memoirs, object biographies, and historic anecdotes, the royal family helped us deepen our understanding of the Bhadrajun collection’s material culture — from treasured textiles to musical heritage.

Together, we continue to celebrate and safeguard the living history of this remarkable fort.

Accessioning at Bhadrajun Fort, Rajasthan

Every object at Bhadrajun Fort has a story — and now, each has a unique identity too.

As part of our documentation and preservation efforts, the Mahira Foundation has assigned Accession Numbers to each object in the collection. These numbers follow a standard format that helps us catalogue, track, and care for every item.

Format:
Collection Abbreviation / Category Abbreviation / Serial Number
Example: BF/JWL/1
(Bhadrajun Fort / Jewellery / Object No. 1)

From royal jewels to historical textiles, each object is now part of a well-documented legacy that will live on for generations.

To enhance the identification and detailing of the collection, each object was meticulously photographed from multiple angles — capturing both full views and intricate close-ups. High-resolution images brought out the fine craftsmanship and subtle features of these antiquities, ensuring that their unique composition is accurately recorded. This visual documentation by Mahira Foundation serves as a lasting archive of the fort’s priceless heritage.

Mahira Foundation has successfully undertaken and completed a comprehensive inventory of the artefact collection housed at Bhadrajun Fort, Jalore and Bhadrajun House, Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

The final inventory comprises 5,109 artefacts, encompassing a wide array of categories including painting, armoury, manuscripts, textiles, and other historically significant objects. This initiative represents a pivotal effort in the ongoing preservation and documentation of Rajasthan’s tangible heritage.

A key part of the process was generating detailed object-level metadata, including title, caption, measurements, photographs, and academic remarks. Each artefact is documented in both digital (PDF) and print formats, thematically categorized for clarity and future reference.

This initiative marks a significant step toward the conservation, documentation, and digitization of India’s cultural heritage.

Mahira Foundation prepared the Inventory at the Pokaran Thikana, Rajasthan.

The final inventory of the Pokaran Royal Family collection consisted of 6547 artefacts, ranging from Books to Audiovisual material.

An important step of the conservation and documentation process was to create an elaborate object inventory of the collection of the artefacts. The exercise, although exhausting, can simplify the process of identification of these objects in the future. The inventory consists of minute details that describe the object in the following ways:

(a) Name of the object (Title)
(b) Measurement
(c) Material
(d) Inscription
(e) Photographic evidence/Photography
(f) Remarks/Academic Detailing

The inventory sheets are detailed with the afore-mentioned specifications of the artefacts. The summary of the inventory process duly compiled in one excel entry for every single object has been shared in Portable Document Formats (PDF) as well as hard copies. A thematically categorized and detailed out set of inventory follows this outline.
