We, the members of the Working Peoples Coalition (WPC), mourn the passing of Dr Babasaheb “Baba” Adhav, comrade, mentor and founding member of what began as the Working Peoples Charter and now lives on as the Working Peoples Coalition.

A trained medical practitioner who chose to dedicate his life to the most deprived, especially hamals and other unorganised workers, Baba’s insights from his work revealed deep nutritional and health crises, leading to Kashtachi Bhakar in 1974 in Pune, providing affordable meals to workers facing heavy labour and poverty, now serving thousands daily. His departure leaves a deep void, but his life’s work and commitment remain our compass.

Even at 93, he protested changes to the Mathadi Act he helped secure. For WPC, he was part of our foundation, always encouraging a common platform for workers to speak in their own voice. His politics united wages with dignity and social justice with democratic values.

We pledge to carry forward his legacy in our organising, negotiations, struggles and everyday practice, guided by his values of courage, equality, fraternity and the unwavering belief that every worker has the right to a secure and dignified life.

We stand shoulder to shoulder with the millions of workers, farmers, and rural laborers and 10 central trade unions organising and participating in today’s Bharat Bandh, as they voice their opposition to “anti‑worker, anti‑farmer, and pro‑corporate” policies through a united 17‑point charter of demands . On this significant day, over 25 crore people—from banking, insurance, coal mining, public transport, and postal services—have bravely taken part in a nationwide strike, disrupting core services to demand dignity, fair wages, social security, and protection of collective bargaining rights . We honor their courage and determination. May this powerful show of solidarity catalyze meaningful dialogue and lead to policies that uplift workers and secure the future of Bharat.

This is our struggle, everyone’s struggle — for dignity, rights, and justice!
