Options for Reorienting India's Agricultural Support Policies

India's agricultural support policies have been instrumental in strengthening food security and supporting farmer livelihoods. As the country advances the implementation of the New Agricultural Policy 2025, this consultation will explore how existing support can better contribute to sustainable agricultural growth, climate resilience, improved nutrition, and healthy diets.

The discussion will be anchored around a new IFPRI Discussion Paper examining India's rice support policies. The study explores how redirecting a portion of existing input subsidies toward agricultural research, innovation, and climate-resilient technologies could promote more sustainable farming, improve diet affordability, and strengthen food security.

The consultation will bring together policymakers, researchers, economists, and development practitioners to discuss evidence, policy options, and the institutional and political considerations for reorienting agricultural support. The insights generated will help inform the next phase of IFPRI's research and contribute to a broader policy dialogue with government and other stakeholders.
