The Faculty of Humanitarian Medics (FHM) is part of the University of the Blue Cross & Blue Crescent (University for Humanity). Members or volunteering staff of the Faculty of Humanitarian Medics hold fellowship of the FHM faculty association and are active members of the Blue Cross & Blue Crescent movement as key personnel of our medical & healthcare arm, with branches of the faculty in every country where national Blue Cross Societies or Blue Crescent Societies operate. Humanitarian Medics are emergency medical responders (EMR's) who are humanitarian workers specially trained to provide medical healthcare in emergencies in disaster effected regions. Medic is a term that may be used to denote a wide range of trained emergency medical responders, each with different levels of training, ranging from first-aid and basic life support, advanced life support, to healthcare practitioners and physicians in a wide range of specialisms.
Terms may have different meanings with different training requirements in different countries where we operate.
FHM has been set up for the purpose of encouraging the sharing of best practice in humanitarian medic activities, and facilitating an academic training network for Humanitarian Medics (HMs) that include a range of health practitioners, paramedics, first-aiders, army medics, rescue medic personnel, and Humanitarian Medicine Doctors (HMDs), that are involved in our 'Health4Humanity' projects, programs and campaigns.
The Faculty of Humanitarian Medics (FHM) comprises:
1. FHM Regional Chapters - A network of Humanitarian Medics such as paramedics and other health practitioners, first-aiders, and first-aid tutors and trainers.
2. Incorporates the Faculty of Humanitarian Medicine Doctors (FHMD) - A network of profession specific and profession-led sub-faculties, for MDs, DOs, NDs, NMDs, DCs, DPMs, DPTs, iMD's and aMDs etc., set up for the purpose of facilitating a forum for specific professions involved in humanitarian medicine.
