World Metrology Day 2026 | Building Trust in Policy Making

Effective regulations are built not only through enforcement, but through collaboration, consultation, and practical implementation. Trust in regulatory systems is strengthened when policy development is transparent, consultative, and implementation-oriented.

On World Metrology Day 2026, IFBA highlights the importance of collaborative policy-making to strengthen Legal Metrology frameworks and boost consumer confidence. Structured industry participation — through consultations, joint working groups, pilot initiatives, and continuous feedback — helps create practical, clear, and effective regulations.

IFBA appreciate the efforts of Department of Legal Metrology in inviting F&B Industry whenever related policy interventions are made to Rules. IFBA has been actively participating to represent member’s position on such policy interventions like Unique Selling Preposition (USP) for declaring two or more prime constituents on FOP, Revision of Schedule II to bring back provision of edible oils etc. IFBA takes pride in conducting webinar on World Metrology Day in association with the Department of Legal Metrology and Members to create awareness around regulatory requirements impacting F&B sector.

Collaborative, evidence-based engagement like this supports harmonized, consumer-friendly regulations and improves clarity and trust for both industry and consumers. IFBA remains committed to constructive engagement that ensures policies are workable, transparent, and focused on consumer protection.

🟢Debunking Food Myths & Misleading Claims:

“Palm oil does not automatically lead to heart disease or heart failure” ~ Dr. Varun Bansal, Senior Consultant Cardiac Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals

Dr. Varun Bansal dispelled the long-standing myth linking palm oil to cardiovascular risk, citing evidence from domestic and global studies. He explained:

● Palm oil’s 50:50 saturated-to-unsaturated fat profile is comparable to many commonly consumed fats

● Moderate consumption shows no consistent link to heart disease or cholesterol spikes

● Antioxidants like tocotrienols and tocopherols offer cardioprotective benefits

● Health impact depends on overall dietary patterns, not a single ingredient

Replacing trans fats with , he noted, aligns with global initiatives. And focused that context matters more than content. Balance beats blame. He echoed the remarks by Dr. Komal and urged consumers to ensure balanced fat intake and dietary diversity.

Rethinking Nutrition | Choosing the Right Cooking Oil

At the World Food Day celebration organized by and National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management, Kundli (NIFTEM-K) at IHM Delhi, Dr. Komal Chauhan Dean-Research and Outreach, NIFTEM shared her perspective that cooking oil plays a critical role in our daily diet, yet it is often misunderstood or overlooked when making food choices. Instead of focusing on single ingredients, it is important to understand what the oil is made of and how it contributes to overall nutrition.

💬 Choosing an edible oil is important aspect of cooking which must be led by understanding the fatty acid composition of the oil rather than Good / Bad labelling

Key points to consider:

📊 Know Your Oil Composition: Every cooking oil contains a combination of:
Saturated Fatty Acids (SFA) Monounsaturated Fatty Acids (MUFA) Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFA)

⚖️ Balance is the Key: A healthy diet should aim for a balanced intake of fats, supporting overall metabolic health.

🌴 Informed Choices Matter: No single oil is perfect on its own. Selecting oils based on their fatty acid profile and using them appropriately in your diet is key. Like many oils, palm oil contains a mix of fatty acids.

🚫 Beyond Simplistic Views: Labeling Oil as “good” or “bad” oversimplifies nutrition. The focus should remain on balance, quantity, and overall dietary patterns.

✔️ Choosing oils based on their fatty acid composition and using them in moderation supports better overall nutrition

🌿 Rethinking Nutrition | Palm Oil & Why Moderation Matters

At the World Food Day celebration organized by IFBA and NIFTEM-K at IHM Delhi, Dr. Varun Bansal shared an evidence-based perspective on palm oil, one of the most widely debated topics.

In this segment, he highlights the importance of moving beyond misconceptions and understanding the true role of oils in our diet.

💬 “Oils are essential for our body—they are a fundamental part of our cell structure. The key is moderation, not elimination.”

Key insights from the conversation:
🧬 Essential for Life: Oils play a critical role in maintaining cellular structure and supporting overall body function.
📊 Backed by Research: Global research, including studies aligned with WHO guidance, emphasizes the importance of balanced fat consumption.
⚖️ Balance of Fatty Acids: A mix of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, such as those present in palm oil, when consumed in moderation, can support overall health.
🚫 Myth vs Science: Focusing on a single ingredient misses the bigger picture of diet quality, quantity, and lifestyle.

It’s time to move beyond fear-driven narratives and adopt a more science-led, balanced approach to nutrition.
