Pride of Kalimpong. Pride of Indian Gorkhas

Dr. Gambir Singh Yonzone, son of Sinji Busti, Kalimpong, is set to receive the prestigious Padma Shri Award for his lifetime of service to science, education, and society.

A pioneering botanist, first Fulbright Fellow from the hills, visionary educationist, and environmental crusader, Dr. Yonzone has dedicated his life to the Darjeeling Himalayas—documenting its rich plant heritage, nurturing young minds, and protecting its fragile ecology. From shaping generations as Principal of Kalimpong College to playing a key role in the creation of Singalila & Neora Valley National Parks, his legacy is deeply rooted in the mountains and its people.

Even in his 80s, he continues to inspire with humility, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to conservation and community welfare.

A truly deserving honor for a life lived in service.
