When we think of Independent India, we remember the great leaders whose stories shaped our nation. But how often do we remember the heroes who fought for freedom right here in Coimbatore?
Through The Heroes of Kovai, we brought their stories closer to home, remembering the people who walked our streets, stood up against injustice, made sacrifices, and helped shape the freedom we inherited.
Because freedom was not built by famous names alone. It was built by countless ordinary people who chose to do something extraordinary.
This Independence Day, let’s honour their courage by turning remembrance into responsibility — by fulfilling our duties, serving our communities, and working towards a better India.

"Gandhiji’s Loudspeaker"
We begin our Heroes of Kovai series with a man whose voice carried the message of the freedom movement across Coimbatore.
A devoted Gandhian, Kovai Subri became one of Mahatma Gandhi’s trusted associates in the region. Known for his powerful voice and his ability to translate Gandhi’s Hindi speeches into Tamil, Gandhi affectionately called him “The Loudspeaker” of Coimbatore.
Subri actively participated in the Salt Satyagraha and Flag Satyagraha, spending years in prison for his involvement in the freedom struggle.
His contribution did not end with the movement. As Municipal Chairman of Coimbatore, he continued to serve the city and its people.
A freedom fighter. A powerful voice. A servant of Kovai.

The Tamil who sailed ships
V.O.C. was more than a freedom fighter. He challenged British power through economic independence. In 1906, he founded the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company, launching Indian-owned ships on the Tuticorin–Colombo route to challenge the British monopoly. It was this pioneering effort to sail Indian ships against British economic dominance that earned him the title “Kappalottiya Thamizhan.”
