The Afghan Girl By Steve McCurry

Steve McCurry, born in Philadelphia in 1950, studied cinematography and theatre at Penn State before transitioning into photojournalism through a job at a local newspaper. By the time he photographed the Afghan Girl in 1984, McCurry had already built a reputation for finding the human faces behind geopolitical conflict.

Often referred to as the “First World’s Third World Mona Lisa”, this photograph continues to capture the attention of viewers around the world to this day, telling the story of war, displacement, and the human cost of conflict.

Hear from participating educators!

Over the past few months, we’ve had the privilege of engaging educators from across the country through our Arts Education Teacher Training Workshops, building skills, knowledge, and confidence to bring arts-based learning into their classrooms across 7 states, impacting over 2 lakhs students.

But what makes these workshops truly meaningful are the educators who walk in ready to learn, explore, experiment, and reimagine what learning can look like through art.

So, we asked them about their experience—and here’s what they had to say.

Their reflections remind us that learning is not a one-way process. Every educator brings their own perspectives into the room, making each workshop a space for shared learning and discovery.

We’re grateful to work alongside such passionate and committed educators, who bring their own curiosity, creativity, and experiences into every learning space.

“All for one and one for all, united we stand, divided we fall.”

But what does unity look like for a student?
Is it many voices becoming one? Different colours coming together?
A group standing side by side, each bringing something of their own?

During a recent art session at UPS Kumba Toli, Jharkhand, Grade 4 students were invited to explore these questions through a sheet of paper and a box of colours.

Led by Mr Durgesh Kumar, the session began with familiar symbols and images of unity. From there, the students were encouraged to look beyond what they knew and imagine what togetherness meant to them.

What emerged was not one definition of unity, but many. Each artwork was different, yet the same idea connected each — that we can be many, and still belong to something shared.

Sometimes, the simplest activities can open the door to the biggest ideas.

Seen, heard, included!

Long before classrooms or formal spaces for learning existed, people gathered in circles.

Across cultures and generations, the circle has been a way of creating connection. The circle makes space for every voice, including the quieter ones, giving each person an equal opportunity to participate, contribute, and be heard.

Classrooms across Jammu are embracing this approach, creating opportunities for natural connections to form.
During art sessions, students sit in a circle. They look at each other’s work, exchange ideas, ask questions, listen, and find inspiration from the person sitting beside them.

Art is about more than what we make. It’s about looking, listening, sharing, and creating together. And sometimes, all it takes to make that happen naturally is to change the way we sit in the classroom.
