Fishers from Chengalpattu District All Fishers Collective met the Joint Commissioner of Fisheries department on 30 July, 2026 and submitted a letter requesting not to award No Objection Certificate to the Mamallan Reservoir project.

CRZ clearance mandates that NOC shall be provided by the Fisheries Department for no impacts on traditional fishers and Fisheries in Nemmeli backwaters. But the project is built over the traditional fishing grounds in Nemmeli wetlands where 6,000 fishers from 20 plus fisher villages would lose their livelihood.

Huge corruption charges have been made over the Water Resource Department officials in the Mamallan Reservoir Project. This confirms that most projects are not implemented based on people requirements, rather most projects are proposed only for getting larger contracts by politicians and commission charges for the government officials and politicians..

This project should be halted immediately until the during investigation.
