Chennai Wetlands Action Collective strongly urges the TN Government to revert the proposed new Secretariat at fisher's ancestral land at Pattinampakkam.

It's fishers' ancestral land taken over by TNHB and the fisher community wanted this land for their secure housing as their current housing next to Adyar River is under threat of sea level rise as per Greater Chennai Corporation Climate Action Plan.

Airport and Development: Do We Really Need a New International Airport?

Yesterday, Uvakai Research Foundation conducted an online orientation session to present the evidence behind our latest research examining the relationship between airport development and Tamil Nadu's economic growth.

The discussion was prompted by the widely cited claim that a new international airport is essential for achieving Tamil Nadu's US$1.5 trillion economy.

Building on our earlier hydrological assessment of the proposed Parandur Airport site, which highlighted significant flood-risk, environmental, and governance concerns, this new study shifts the debate from "Where should Tamil Nadu's next airport be located?" to a more fundamental question:

"Does Tamil Nadu currently need a new international airport?"

Using official DGCA and AAI data from FY2016-17 to FY2024-25, the study examines passenger demand, airport utilisation, cargo trends, aircraft movements, connectivity, and future mobility scenarios. It critically evaluates common assumptions linking airport expansion with economic growth and explores whether strengthening existing infrastructure may offer a more sustainable pathway.

The session brought together researchers, professionals, and concerned citizens for an evidence-based discussion on development planning, infrastructure investments, and long-term public interest.

At Uvakai Research Foundation, we believe that major infrastructure decisions must be guided by data, transparency, and sustainability-not assumptions.
