Newly formed Interact Club plants trees at Govt. Model High School, Sector 53, Chandigarh

Chandigarh, 9 October 2026: Students of the newly chartered Interact Club of Govt. Model High School, Sector 53, Chandigarh, today planted trees on their school campus as their very first act of service. The club was chartered earlier in the day by Rotary Club Chandigarh Horizon (RID 3080), in collaboration with Kaira Hope Foundation, with 40 students joining as Interactors.

During the charter ceremony, Interact Club President Gaurav Sharma had promised that the club would take up meaningful activities throughout the year. The Interactors kept that promise at once, heading straight from the ceremony to plant saplings on the campus. They were joined by members of Rotary Club Chandigarh Horizon and the school staff.

The club’s next responsibility will be collecting old phones, chargers and other electronic waste under Project Punarjanma – “The Reincarnation of Technology,” the e-waste initiative of Rotary Club Chandigarh Horizon with Kaira Hope Foundation. The e-waste will be recycled safely so that it does not pollute the soil and water.

Interact Club chartered at Govt. Model High School, Sector 53, Chandigarh

Chandigarh, 9 October 2026: Rotary Club Chandigarh Horizon (RID 3080), in collaboration with Kaira Hope Foundation, today held the Charter Ceremony of the newly formed Interact Club of Govt. Model High School, Sector 53, Chandigarh. Forty students joined as Interactors, becoming part of a global network of more than 3,40,000 young people in nearly 15,000 Interact clubs across 145 countries.

Math teacher Mr. Kapil Mohan Sood welcomed the guests and anchored the programme. Science Mistress and Interact Club Coordinator Mrs. Rupinder Kaur explained why the club was formed.

Rtn. Avinash Taneja, President, Rotary Club Chandigarh Horizon, then addressed the students. He traced Rotary’s journey from its founding by Paul Harris in Chicago in 1905 to the first Interact club in Melbourne, Florida, in 1962. Explaining Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self,” he cited the example of Interactors at a school in Bhakarpura who helped a sick classmate keep up with his studies. Recalling his own school days, he urged the students to revive the practice of doing at least one good deed every day.

“Leadership is not about a badge or a title. It is about the courage to say, ‘I will do it,’” he told the Interactors. He encouraged them to dream big, serve with their hearts and lead with a smile.

The names of all 40 members were read out, and the office bearers were introduced along with their roles: President Gaurav Sharma, Vice President Gurnoor Singh, Secretary Komal, Treasurer Saju Khatun, President-Elect (2027–28) Krishna, and Directors Palak, Ramesh, Tanush Katoch, Kapil, Kiran and Anshika.

Rtn. Avinash Taneja installed President Gaurav Sharma by placing the Interact collar on him, and the office bearers received their Interact pins. Rotary Club members presented the framed Certificate of Organization to Headmistress Mrs. Riya Arya and the club officers. On behalf of Kaira Hope Foundation, all officers and directors received tokens of appreciation.

President Gaurav Sharma and Vice President Gurnoor Singh spoke about their goals for the year ahead. Rtn. Taneja then administered Rotary’s Four-Way Test to the Interactors. Rtn. Rajpal Midha, Secretary, and Rtn. Shailender K. Bhandari also blessed the Interactors.

Headmistress Mrs. Riya Arya proposed the vote of thanks, and the formal proceedings concluded with the National Anthem. Also present were Mr. Jerry Bansal (Math Teacher), Mrs. Rachhpal Kaur (Punjabi Teacher) and Mrs. Inderpreet Kaur (Counsellor).

As their first act of service, the Interactors planted trees on the school campus.

The students’ creativity in their posters on e-waste was truly impressive! 🎨♻️

Through colours, ideas and powerful messages, the students of G D Goenka Public School, Mohali demonstrated that environmental responsibility can begin at a very young age. Their posters beautifully captured the urgency of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Responsible E-Waste Disposal.

It was one of the highlights of our Half-Day RYLA on E-Waste Initiatives, organised by Rotary Club Chandigarh Horizon. Seeing young minds turn awareness into creativity reinforces exactly why such initiatives matter.

Small actions. Young minds. Big impact. 🌍♻️

Half-Day RYLA – E-Waste Initiatives: A Resounding Success!

Mohali, 5 October 2026: Rotary Club Chandigarh Horizon, under Rotary District 3080, organised a Half-Day RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) on E-Waste Initiatives today at G D Goenka Public School, Mohali. It was jointly organised with Kaira Hope Foundation and held under the guidance of District Chair RYLA, Rtn. Anil Chadha. The programme was thoughtfully conceptualised and flawlessly executed.

Opening the programme, Rtn. Avinash Taneja, President of the club, asked students where their old phones end up, and most admitted they lie forgotten in a drawer at home. He shared how a 12-year-old girl in Dubai turned one question about five old phones into a campaign that has since recycled over 40 tonnes of e-waste, and how two 15-year-old students from Bengaluru collected 82 kg in just a month for a school project. "Big change often begins with one child and one small question," he said. "Phones get upgraded every year, but we have only one Earth."

Project Chair PP Rtn. Vijay Kumar Dhall made a presentation on e-waste management. He explained the hazards of storing old electronic items at homes, offices and factories, and of handing e-waste to unauthorised recyclers, which releases toxic substances into the soil, water and air. He urged the students to become torch-bearers and support the Government of India's mission on e-waste management, and administered the e-waste pledge.

The students took part enthusiastically in quiz, declamation and painting competitions, and collected 22 kg of e-waste in a collection drive. Rtn. Manjeet Singh conducted the quiz and, with Rtn. Gurminder Multani and Rtn. Shailender Bhandari, judged the declamation contest. Rtn. Nitya Prakash guided the students on using AI tools wisely to find information. All active participants in all the activities were suitably rewarded with geometry boxes and pencil & colour boxes sponsored by Kaira Hope Foundation.

The Principal and staff warmly appreciated our club's initiative. Our sincere thanks to Mrs. Shivani Nagpal and Mr. Gurjeet Singh for hosting us and coordinating this programme so graciously on behalf of the school.

With the theme "Inspire • Empower • Lead – Nurturing Leaders, Building a Better Tomorrow", the programme carried the message of Reduce • Reuse • Recycle • Reimagine, and reminded students that small actions make a big impact for a clean planet, brighter minds and greener communities.

The RYLA was a curtain-raiser to Punarjanma – "The Reincarnation of Technology", a Strategic Inter-District E-Waste Management and Circular Economy Campaign of Rotary District 3080, hosted by Rotary Club Chandigarh Horizon.

Present from our club: PP Rtn. Vijay Dhall, Rtn. Avinash Taneja, Rtn. Manjeet Singh, Rtn. Shailender Bhandari, Rtn. Gurminder Multani and Rtn. Nitya Prakash.

Well done, team! Small actions, big impact.
