Civic Sense Starts Young: Braintree School's Japanese-Inspired Cleanliness Drive
Yesterday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the magnificent Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu, a six-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra in Guwahati, symbolizing India's infrastructure leap. Yet, media footage quickly captured a sour note: litter scattered across the fresh span, courtesy of careless adults lacking basic civic sense.
This isn't isolated. Recently, Indian Railways issued a stark appeal for the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train: "If you don't know how to use the toilet properly, don't board." These incidents expose a persistent gap—adults modeling poor habits for the next generation.
Braintree International School Steps Up
In Bongaigaon, Assam, Braintree International School (under Reiyukai Knowledge Foundation) is tackling this head-on. They've launched a dedicated program embedding cleanliness and civic responsibility using proven Japanese techniques like kaizen (continuous improvement) and 5S methodology (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain).
Hands-On Lessons: Students from Nursery to Grade 10 practice daily clean-ups, waste segregation, and bridge/toilet etiquette simulations.
Cultural Tie-In: Inspired by Japan's spotless public spaces, kids role-play real scenarios—turning "litterbugs" into guardians.
Community Reach: Extending to after-school via Mentor & Mentee Centre, aiming for 500+ kids habituated for life.
Why It Matters
Healthy civic habits build healthy nations. While grand bridges rise, it's schools like Braintree—focusing on SDG 4 quality education—that prevent tomorrow's headlines. By nurturing mindful citizens early, they're ensuring Assam's progress shines litter-free.
Bravo, Braintree! Let's all pledge: Clean today, proud tomorrow. 🇮🇳✨
