Nipah virus is a terrifying virus with an extremely high fatality rate, ranging from 45% to 75%, and there is no specific cure. This virus is zoonotic, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans, primarily through fruit bats that have consumed or come into contact with contaminated fruit and juices. Since the first recorded outbreak in India in 2001, more than 200 people have died, mainly in the eastern state of West Bengal and the southern state of Kerala. Although official Indian media reports indicate a low number of confirmed cases, it is possible the government is downplaying the situation to reduce public panic and control the spread of information. In response to this situation, countries such as Thailand, Nepal, and Singapore have implemented strict screening measures at airports and customs for travelers and goods from India. We should take immediate action to prevent a larger public health crisis.
