In the sugarcane fields of Beed, Maharashtra, thousands of women work under extremely difficult conditions just to support their families. A recent health report has exposed the painful reality behind their lives. Many women continue working despite severe health problems, pregnancy, and physical exhaustion because stopping work often means losing their only source of income.
The report found that 843 women, most of them between 30 and 35 years old, had undergone hysterectomy after suffering from problems like heavy bleeding, infections, and constant pain. At the same time, 1,523 pregnant women were still working long hours in the fields during the harvesting season.
Every year, nearly 1.75 lakh labourers, including around 78,000 women, migrate from Beed to sugarcane farms across different states for seasonal work. Poor nutrition, lack of healthcare, and physically demanding labour have also led to widespread anaemia and weakness among these women.
While some health initiatives have been started, the situation clearly shows the urgent need for better healthcare, maternity support, safer working conditions, and dignity for women labourers. These women are not just workers they are mothers, caregivers, and individuals who deserve care, respect, and protection.
