In association with world class surgeons from Interplast Germany and Dr Sharad Kumar Dicksheet, FWO has helped impact nearly 4000 people with functional deformities such as correction of cleft lips, cleft palates, removal of burn contractures, skin grafts, removal of certain types of tumours, separation of joined fingers, certain types of micro surgeries etc
The international medical team typical
ly consists of a set of Maxilo Facio Surgeons, Plastic Surgeons, Anaesthesiologists, Assisting nurses and staff. They bring their own equipment and provide the entire service free of cost, while FWO makes the local arrangements including acquiring medical permissions; hospital tie-up; arranging for medical supplies and mobilising a team of volunteers on the ground. Patients are only required to travel upto the hospital for screening - all procedures post that, including pre-operative diagnostics; surgery; post-operative care; medicines and daily meals up until discharge are provided free of cost. From 12 month babies, to grandmothers in their 60s - many of these patients have had to live with the social stigma of the deformity and scars for a large part of their lives. Children with cleft lips and palates are often malnourished if left untreated. Burn contractors when severe, can create functional issues restricting movement of joints and limbs as well. The camp aims to treat for these functional deformities and does not operate for cosmetic purposes.
