BeautifulBengaluru Beautiful Bengaluru is now Beautiful Bharat: a citizen volunteer group working towards a cleaner & greener city, country, and world

Beautiful Bengaluru began as a vision to enable a charming city retain its identity even as it evolved into a city of the future. It now inspires simple habits that make for cleaner, greener cities everywhere. Beautiful Bengaluru is now BEAUTIFUL BHARAT - a movement that actively engages citizens to push for their rights, but also discharge their responsibilities for clean-green-safe cities. Beaut

iful Bharat is a dream that collectively we can turn into a reality. Be a part of the change and play a role in the transformation of your city, while also greening the planet. By engaging citizens to ‘Be The Change’, we aim to push greener thinking into daily habits of individuals/communities/enterprises, through our many campaigns and resources on reduced waste, litter, saving resources or working for cleaner public spaces. We believe that if each citizen plays their part with small steps for sustainable living, it will all add up for impact. Our current priority campaign is to and we need your support to make this crucial movement a success. We brought the issue to the national spotlight in March 2020 against the backdrop of covid spread, with a petition to the PM - spitting is now a punishable offence. We continue to drive a national movement to ease out the habit of spitting once and for all, grabbing the inadvertent opportunity provided to the country by the pandemic – because now people are listening! Spitting spreads covid, yet those who spit seem unaware and move masks aside to spit. Bridging this knowledge gap is the crux our campaign through a massive awareness-building exercise. This is being done through campaign partners across the country – be it civic, community, medical groups, NGOs, educational institutions etc, all part of The Alliance to StopIndiaSpitting. Building a strong network is enabling us to spread the campaign message far and wide. Our bank of resources (posters and videos including celebrity appeals, song spoofs, animated videos targeting at underprivileged groups, etc) makes it easy to put out continued messaging that clearly reinforces that spitting must stop. We need the support of those who do not themselves spit, because it is they who need to explain and drive the change. Your support to spread our campaign resources, to connect us with partners or celebrity contacts will be very useful. The nation is buzzing with news of the new 4 way segregation rules from 1st April 2026, or heavy fines will result. A prominent article in Times of India on 1st April by Nithya Mandyam reminds citizens of this.

We’ve heard echoes: “I pay taxes so why should I segregate?” The answer is simple. Because segregation is a basic duty of every inhabitant of our planet. Mixed waste is killing our environment with more methane generation that is making our cities not just filthier, but warmer too! And we who are adding to the problem, are the only ones who can reverse this downward spiral of climate change.

Our view: segregation is simple and it is an essential duty. It is not difficult if you’ve already been doing Wet-Dry segregation. If you’ve been doing 3 way segregation, it is even simpler - stay tuned to our posts this week for more.

So let’s segregate, not just because it is now mandatory or punishable, but it is a way we can play our small part in the quest for cleaner cities and a greener planet. It may take maximum a minute extra a day to segregate, but it is a critical requirement to fight the climate crisis. Our actions ensure cleaner streets and less waste to landfill.

Do add your comments. Many agree this is critical and we need to spread this practice at a feverish pace to immediately reduce mixed waste burdening our planet.

Your response to the new segregation rules? 👇🏼

Catch our ‘bee-autiful’ reel on World Biodiversity Day today, with Shambhavi Sharma voicing this appeal to all children, so everyone realises that bees are our friends, not foes.

World Biodiversity Day is a reminder to foster ecosystems that encourage biodiversity, be it bees, bugs, birds or any creatures including those working hard to break down our food and other organic waste to rich compost, back to the soil. Thriving biodiversity means healthy ecosystems which help our planet.

In continuation of our World Bee Day message, this is a call for all children to support our ‘Protect our bees’ campaign by participating in an art contest with your drawings of our friends, the bees. We need children to love rather than fear bees, and understand how important their role as pollinators is for our planet.

Let children across speak up for bees and , or maybe it should be ! 😁

Send in your art, just like this picture sent by Aarvi Pujari, at the time 5 yrs, of Midnapore, West Bengal. Campaign details in the reel.

today gets the attention of all chai lovers! Many Indians kickstart their day with tea from tea bags, but are unaware that this has a substantial impact on both our health and on the environment.

Today is a good chance to alert users of the harm caused by the combination of hot liquids with plastic - because that is exactly what tea bags are made from. The type of plastic is called NWPP or non-woven polypropylene, though because of its fabric-like appearance, many do not realise that it is plastic. So do ensure that you aren’t drinking plastic in your tea!

Tea bags also fall into the category of single-use disposables and generate waste. If not properly disposed, they could end in landfill, causing methane generation further impacting climate change.

Our small actions can make a difference, because they all add up. Let's start enjoying that favourite beverage guilt-free, by shifting to reusable options. Tea dispensers are best - they are zero-plastic but also zero-waste.

Better for your health, better for the planet’s too! Happy Tea Day and may this be a happy zero-waste tea journey too!

Today is - a time to remember that bees are our friends, not our foes!

We often see requests for beehive removal vendor details. World Bee Day is a good chance to send in a reminder that bees are a critical part of the ecosystem and should not be killed. Let us consider humane options if at all it becomes necessary to relocate them - many who have had bee hives on nearby trees confirm they do not harm humans if left alone and move on in a few days.

The lead article in the website https://www.gov.si/en/registries/projects/world-bee-day/ on the role of bees is worth reading. Some amazing facts:
* Today every third spoonful of food depends on pollination.
* To make a kg of honey, a bee must visit 4 million flowers and fly four times the distance around the planet.

Let’s save bees; they’re our friends not foes! There are many reasons for them to become extinct, so we must proactively protect bees.

Burning leaves are filling the air with smoke, and you happen to pass by. What would you do? Some don't even register this is happening.
Some think: "how terrible, it is spoiling our air", but rush away.
Some may call out angrily indicating this is not okay.

The best response which very few do, is to stop and patiently explain that burning leaves is not a good practice. If the smoke bothers you at the time, try to go back another time and have a conversation.

Explain that by burning, we are destroying a precious natural resource of our planet. The fumes from burning harm our health, while also harming the planet.

This reel captures this many amazing images of composters by Soilandhealth, SGKK, Vedan, Koramangala RWA and more. Through it, we hope to shed light not just on why burning leaves must be avoided, but what to do with them instead. Indeed, composting leaves is not difficult at all. Getting bags of rich manure and fertile soil is the reward for efforts of those who start composting.

Try simple ways to convince people not to burn - tell us your ideas in the comments. Let's come together to create awareness and say no to burning and yes to composting.

The next time you see burning, be a changemaker and speak up for a silent planet

A simple solution to the pressing waste crisis, getting worse each year: if every home begins composting, what a huge impact that can have on city waste volumes and climate change.

Read more in this throwback Bangalore Mirror article of 17th May 2025 by Y Maheshwara Reddy. Even more relevant a year later with SWM under sharp focus for its role in climate change, the article features views of experts Vani Murthy , Vasuki Iyengar .composting and Odette Katrak on how composting can be a game-changer.

It demonstrates that ordinary people who are not experts can make extraordinary compost, that too in limited space!

Composting is quite simple, not as difficult as many believe. "It is easy to do and will reduce the burden on landfills" - Vani Murthy

Composting does not need space. "If you have space in your mind and heart, you will find space to compost" - Vasuki Iyengar

Composting can be done by busy people too! "It is magical, relaxing but most of all a simple action we can take from our homes to fight climate change"- Odette Katrak

Follow the pages in this collab post to know more about how you can compost.

As part of our campaign, you'll find much related content over the past month, quotes by composting stalwarts and a reel by ordinary people making extraordinary compost that we hope will inspire you to try it too.

One of the popular reasons we hear often for not composting is, “I don’t have the space for it”.

Here’s ’s tiny corner in her balcony which has been more than sufficient space for many years now! It is also her favourite corner where the composting action is!

This sleek ‘Gobble Mini composter’ by st fits perfectly in small spaces, is so easy and hassle-free - just drop in your food scraps, add cocopeat and your compost magically happens, which you can pull out from the bottom a few weeks later!

The most common reason for not composting is now no longer a valid reason! So we ask you, what’s holding you back from composting? See this as motivation to start your composting journey TODAY! Less waste, more love for the planet!

Do connect to get more details - because composting is the single most powerful climate action we can all take from the comfort of our homes. And we strongly believe that more people composting helps our planet.

Rain alert - it is summer but it does rain suddenly, so here’s an important message: Dry waste is ending up soaked due to improper storage by many homes, apartments and commercial premises.

We must prevent this loss of resources to recycling - as our poster emphasises. Because Dry Waste is no longer dry if it gets wet in the rain! Soggy waste also results in mosquito/dengue issues, smell, etc.

Solution: ensure waste bins are in a place where they remain dry, or else waste must be stored in waterproof bins or jumbo bags, so that Dry waste stays dry. Storage of cartons, paper or other dry waste in the open needs to be avoided. You could alert those responsible to take precautionary measures – even if it be a tarpaulin cover thrown over solves the issue, but only if it is done well in time, not after the drizzle begins.

Do share this poster with apartments, layout or ward groups, so that we spread the reach of the message and save more dry waste from reaching landfill.

Together, let's do our bit to conserve resources and reduce our burden on the planet.

If you have a baby at home, we’d be glad if could watch this reel. And for all who share our dream of clean streets, do share this widely with family and community groups, and especially those with babies, to help us achieve an important objective - no diapers littered on streets.

Our focus this month is on Sustainable hygiene. Through this spotlight, we hope to prevent the common yet unpleasant sight of dirty diapers strewn across the streets, due to improper disposal. Our municipality cleaners are forced to pick up what we ourselves would not like to.

Our request - let us each carefully follow recommended disposal guidelines so there is no chance that those diapers (or other sanitary waste) dumped on a street, could be from your home or apartment.

Also, wrapping them in newspaper is important - to ensure the contents do not spill out in transit, and we ensure to respect the dignity of those forced to pick it up. Many believe just folding the diaper and fixing back the inbuilt tapes is sufficient, but these often open up during transit, spilling out the ugly contents - which is very unfair to our cleaners and waste pickers. It is best to put a red cross ❌ on the newspaper too - (Mark it red!), and discard it with your sanitary waste.

An even better practice would be to avoid the diaper waste altogether, with a switch to reusable diapers - do consider this because it is safer for the baby's health too.

We do apologise for this somewhat unpleasant subject but well, how can we keep our streets clean and our Bharat beautiful if the subject isn't appropriate for our conversations🤔. Let’s do our bit for cleaner cities and a beautiful planet 🌏

What’s the fastest way to get rid of sanitary waste? Flushing it down the toilet seems to be a common practice, but it’s definitely not a good one.

Out of sight in this case may be temporarily out of mind, but all those plastic sheets from sanitary napkins or panty liners don’t just vanish. Being non-biodegradable, they flow down the pipes till they get stuck somewhere further down and that’s it! Then begin issues of leakage, pipe burst and stinks, often involving huge amounts of repair work, expense, time and effort. What is also unfortunate is that it impacts other residents who may themselves be scrupulous about reducing their waste and discarding it correctly.

As they say, prevention is the best. So here’s our poster with a reminder of the prescribed way to discard any kind of sanitary waste - wrap in newspaper, put it in the Sanitary waste category (and with a red cross ❌ if you have only Wet, Dry collection).

Let’s do the right thing! So that our waste does not continue to haunt someone else after it leaves our homes.

Picture this - A Dry Waste sorting centre with waste-pickers sorting through the incoming collection of different types of waste so they can send it to the correct pile for recycling.

Some homes dispose of smaller items by clubbing them into larger bags, needing further sorting. One of the workers picks up a brown paper bag and opens it. A stench fills the air. It contains soiled sanitary napkins, heavy with period blood. This is not an imagined story but a real experience that happens regularly, because of incorrect disposal practices - surely something we can and must fix!

This may be an ugly description for a social media caption. So imagine what a ugly experience, what an ugly sight and smell for that person unfortunate enough to have to sort through our waste.

Many actually do not know where their soiled sanitary waste is meant to go. Some think in wet waste because it is damp. Others say no, dry because it's not compostable.

Neither please! Our poster tells you more.

Please dispose of these in Sanitary waste, a third category for all kinds of household sanitary waste (and we now have a new 4th category from 1st April 2026 called Special care waste). If your city still has only 2 way segregation, then the prescribed disposal instructions are to wrap it in newspaper with a red cross and ideally hand it over separately, not mixed with your recyclable items.

Small efforts from our end can bring dignity back to our wastepickers and recyclers. It can reduce the waste to landfill because other items get contaminated by wrong disposal.

So let's all just ! Please tag people in the captions who need to see this.

Did you know how to dispose of sanitary waste properly?
