Since AWAG’s inception we have been dedicated to women’s empowerment by helping them fight for basic human rights. At AWAG we take a holistic approach to tackling domestic abuse. We raise awareness about women’s rights, we campaign and lobby for pro-women policies and also support women to be self-reliant in economic and social terms. Until recently, domestic violence was not regarded as a violati
on of human rights in India. Consequently, such cases were either unreported or underreported and often trivialized. In 1985 we began a study on the domestic abuse of women, which led to the re-evaluation of the criminal justice system in Gujarat in 1995. Despite changing values among the new generation in India, social views on domestic violence still have anti-women bias. According to a poll conducted by UNICEF in 2011, 57% of Indian males aged between 15 and 19 believe that domestic violence against women is occasionally justified. In 2011 alone, more than 99000 cases of domestic abuse were reported. Even so, a large number of cases continue to be unreported. AWAG engages in efforts for economic empowerment of women, raising awareness in society towards betterment of circumstances for women and children, supporting the right of women to live with dignity, building research capacity in issues related to women’s rights, raising awareness about education and health of children and adolescents, and engaging in policy dialogue. Through anchoring awareness raising and advocacy around policy themes, AWAG looks towards long-term structural change. Some of our key achievements are:
• Family clinics and counseling services
• 24 Hour telephone helpline for victims of domestic violence
• Short stay home and shelter for victims of domestic violence
• Rehabilitation and livelihoods training services
• Training and sensitization of police force
