Our team, along with Dr. Balu, founder of Lipid Cubes, visited the Narayani SHG Group to closely understand the traditional Chyura (Diploknema butyracea) value chain and its growing livelihood potential in the hills

From learning about the journey of the Chyura fruit and observing the oil extraction process to exploring locally made products like soaps and lip balms, the experience was deeply rooted in community knowledge, practices, and lived experiences.

Through meaningful conversations and village visits, we also got the opportunity to understand the role of Chyura in everyday life — its cultural significance, traditional uses, and the possibilities it holds for strengthening rural livelihoods.

The discussions focused on preserving traditional knowledge, strengthening Chyura-based enterprises, and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities through value addition and innovation.

Sometimes, the most meaningful ideas grow quietly in the mountains — through people, tradition, and community wisdom.

This is just the beginning, and we look forward to taking this work forward to strengthen the usage of Chyura and build more sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities.

Since 2017, Udhyam has supported the journey of 800+ rural entrepreneurs across Uttarakhand.
As we continue to strengthen local entrepreneurship and livelihood opportunities, it became important for us to revisit where the journey began — and reconnect with voices from the ground.
In Sunkiya village, we came together for an in-depth community dialogue to reflect on the current ecosystem, emerging challenges, and future opportunities for entrepreneurship and livelihoods in the hills.
The discussion brought together:
• Udhyam Mentors & Ecosystem Advisors
• Udhyam Team Members
• Entrepreneurs associated with Udhyam since 2016
• Migrant voices from 5 districts
• Young aspiring entrepreneurs
These conversations are helping us better understand evolving realities and co-create stronger, more sustainable opportunities for Uttarakhand’s future.

From migration to meaning

Madan Bohra returned to his village in Champawat, Uttarakhand, and is now running Kavya Homestay—creating opportunities right where he belongs.
Sometimes, coming back is real progress.

At Udhyam, we capture and share such journeys to understand migration—out migration, in migration, and return migration—and to build better livelihood opportunities in the hills.
We are currently connecting with people across Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Champawat & Nainital.
👉 If you or someone you know has a similar story, share it with us—we would love to interview and feature you.
