After yesterday’s insightful webinar with Professor Ofer Dahan, we’re excited to continue the conversation today with Professor Isaya Kisekka (UC Davis) as part of our joint series with CMUA.

Yesterday’s session highlighted how vadose-zone monitoring is reshaping the way we understand subsurface processes and protect groundwater quality.

Today, we shift the focus to one of the most urgent challenges water agencies face: nitrate leaching during drought and extreme precipitation and how deep vadose-zone data can transform both policy and practice.

If you haven’t registered yet - this is the last chance.
The webinar begins at 11:00 a.m. Pacific, and registration is still open for the next few hours.
The registration link is included in the first comment for easy access👇

We’re proud to collaborate with CMUA and bring leading researchers to the forefront for the benefit of the water community.

Looking forward to another meaningful session today.

We're pleased to share and invite you to two, free, upcoming webinars, organized in collaboration with the California Municipal Utilities Association (CMUA), focusing on some of the most critical challenges in groundwater protection, vadose-zone monitoring, and subsurface remediation.

Links to register in comments below.

These sessions bring leading experts to the front line of hydrological innovation:

🔹 December 9 - Prof. Ofer Dahan (BGU)
Vadose-zone processes, advanced monitoring technologies, and their role in groundwater protection.
🔹 December 10 - Prof. Isaya Kisekka (UC Davis)
Field-based remediation strategies and practical approaches for managing contaminated sites.

An opportunity for hydrologists, environmental scientists, and water professionals to deepen their understanding of subsurface processes and engage with top researchers in the field.

This partnership with CMUA reflects our shared commitment to advancing scientific knowledge, strengthening groundwater management, and supporting long-term environmental resilience.

The First Continuous Look at Landfill Leachate Dynamics!🌏

Leachate from municipal solid waste landfills poses a serious threat to groundwater quality. In a study led by Prof. Ofer Dahan and his team, an innovative monitoring system (VMS) was used for the first time to track in real time the dynamics of leachate infiltration and their chemical transformations, from the waste body itself all the way down to groundwater, dozens of meters below.

The findings reveal a complex and concerning picture: contamination “hot spots” can persist for many years after landfill closure. These insights carry significant implications for groundwater protection, regulatory strategies, and the future of landfill management.

In this study we continuously tracked leachates percolation dynamics and chemical transformation, in and under a solid-waste landfill.

💧How are we missing one of the most critical information sources for protecting groundwater?

Monitoring the hydrological and chemical state of groundwater for the purpose of pollution protection, when based solely on the groundwater itself, misses a key principle: detecting contaminants in groundwater means they have already passed through the entire unsaturated zone (also termed as the vadose zone) and accumulated in the aquifer at detectable levels.

💡This leads to the conclusion that the unsaturated zone is a key point for identification of potential pollution events long before it turns evident in groundwater.

At Sensoil Innovations, we implement this insight by using our Vadose zone Monitoring System (VMS) to deliver real time continuous data directly from the unsaturated zone. The VMS , provids hydrologists and policymakers with the reliable information needed to safeguard groundwater quality long before contamination reaches the aquifer.

So, how can we restore contaminated soils?

The truth is that remediation is expensive, complex, and often fails to restore the soil or groundwater to their original state.
That’s why the real key lies in early detection and prevention through continuous, real-time monitoring.

Sensoil’s Vadose-zone Monitoring System (VMS) provides continuous monitoring of the hydrological and chemical properties of the deep sections of the unsaturated zone, helping to detect and prevent pollution at an early stage.

Regulation plays a critical role in protecting global water resources.❗

By establishing standards and ensuring proper monitoring, regulatory frameworks help keep aquifers and groundwater clean, resilient, and available for future generations. Effective regulation provides the structure for continuous data collection, accountability, and informed decision-making in water management.

At Sensoil, we emphasize that reliable, high-resolution subsurface data strengthens regulatory processes and empowers hydrologists and policymakers to take proactive measures in safeguarding water resources. 💧

Beneath our feet lies 99% of liquid freshwater on Earth!💧

Groundwater is a crucial reservoir for life on our planet. It serves as the main source of drinking water for more than half of the world’s population, supports agriculture, strengthens ecosystems, and sustains industrial processes. 🌎

Our groundwater is a precious resource, yet urbanization, agricultural practices, industrial activities, and climate change all pose significant threats to its quality. Water resource remediation has become a serious environmental concern, since it has a direct impact on many aspects of people’s lives.

When pollutants seep into the soil, they can render groundwater unsafe. Nitrogen compounds such as nitrate, nitrite, and ammonium are among the most common inorganic contaminants. Monitoring chemical changes in the soil and identifying early warning signs of contamination are essential steps in prevention.

Preventing pollution requires a multi-faceted approach that includes regulating the use of pesticides and fertilizers, proper management of industrial waste, improving sanitation practices, and adopting advanced monitoring technologies such as the VMS.

We all share the responsibility of keeping the world’s groundwater clean and safe to use.🤝🌱

Is the unsaturated zone a blind spot or an opportunity?

Between the surface and the water table lies the vadose zone, often overlooked, yet scientifically critical. It’s here that the real journey of water and contaminants begins.

🌟 As highlighted by Prof. Ofer Dahan in his 2020 article “Vadose Zone Monitoring as a Key to Groundwater Protection” (Frontiers in Water):
“Providing continuous in-situ measurements in the unsaturated zone enable high resolution hydraulic information that can be used for real time assessment of percolation velocities and water fluxes”

Ignoring this zone means missing crucial subsurface dynamics that influence water recharge, pollutant transport, and land subsidence.

At Sensoil, we monitor the vadose zone in real time, turning what has long been a blind spot into a breakthrough opportunity that supports both scientific research and environmental protection.🌱🌎
