This made me smile last morning. I caught myself thinking again, “only in India.”
A cow standing right in the middle of the entrance. And then, as if she sensed it, she started playing with a plant. I actually felt like she was inviting me into play.
This went on until a building worker arrived, and she seemed to understand it was time to move. I continued on my way, and she came along with me, behind me, beside me.
I found myself thinking I had never walked with a cow before. And I felt safe, and amused.
While a cow is not exactly a common pet, at least not in Western countries, this moment stayed with me.
When I thought about sharing this here, I remembered how, as a therapist, I used to recommend that parents bring a pet into the home.
Animals can support children’s emotional regulation. They offer a steady, reliable presence that does not judge. Something to touch, to play with, to care for.
It is not by chance that it felt important for me to include a pet in the story.
And like everything, it is also a place where children meet change.
So here is a warm recommendation for regulation and grounding.
