August was about bringing generations together. Putting young people in the lead. Showing up for communities.

This month, volunteers across Israel spent time learning from communities and contributing where they were needed, from schools and community gardens to nursing homes, farms, and food distribution centers.
Young people took ownership of their service, while volunteers of all ages found meaningful ways to learn, connect, and give back.

As August came to a close, our staff took a well-earned break, so we’re taking a moment to look back at a month full of service, learning, and community.

Why do people keep choosing Olim Shalav?

Because it’s about more than volunteering.

It’s a chance to practice Hebrew, meet other Olim, build relationships with Israelis, and find a sense of support and community in a new country.

And it’s a way to give back, to get involved, and feel like you’re part of the place you now call home.

Mothers and daughters volunteering in Israel, creating a holiday connection reaching all the way to San Francisco!

A group of mothers and daughters from the US joined us in Israel to spend time with seniors at a local nursing home, making Rosh Hashanah cards to exchange with a nursing home back home in the US. The visit was part of a growing connection between communities, following a recent similar event in San Francisco with our local partners Repair the World Bay Area and Young Adult Emanu-El Community

Another busy week of volunteering, learning, and showing up for communities across Israel!

While our staff take a well-earned rest, we’re looking back on some of our favorite moments from the past week.

📍 Haifa | Gan Karmit
A group of Taglit volunteers from Russia got their hands dirty at Gan Karmit, Israel’s oldest agricultural school. They tackled major weeding and earthwork, transforming two neglected areas ahead of students planting in September.

📍 Haifa | Ethiopian Community House
Olim Shalav volunteers spent the day with members of Haifa’s Ethiopian community, learning about their stories and traditions before working together to plant and take care of the center. The day also included a traditional ceremony, conversations, and a visit to a local art exhibit.

📍 Lod | Elderly Day Center
30 Birthright volunteers from the US, ages 50–80, joined elderly residents in Lod to create a Rosh Hashanah wish tree. Together, they decorated wooden hearts and filled them with holiday wishes and blessings before hanging them on the tree then shared some songs in The group in Hebrew and English.

This week, volunteers stepped into communities across Israel for hands-on projects, meaningful conversations, and time spent together. From supporting schools and community spaces to connecting with seniors, every day offered a new way to show up and make a difference.

Haifa | Nirim School
A Russian-speaking group of parents of lone soldiers transformed three outdoor areas at Nirim School ahead of the new school year, bringing care and energy to a school they may never otherwise have connected with.

Rishon LeZion | Ramat Eliyahu
21 mother-daughter volunteers spent the day with seniors creating Shanah Tovah cards, which will be exchanged with a partner group in San Francisco, connecting generations and communities.

Be’er Sheva | Sigalit Community Center
A Birthright group worked in the community garden and painted a mural at the Sigalit Community Center, giving the space a fresh new look.

Haifa | Yodfat Community Center
A Taglit group from Brazil took part in an honest conversation about the experiences of Arab citizens in Israel, leading to deeper understanding and connection. The group also reflected on hope and the importance of nurturing the next generation.

Haifa | OLEI Community Center
Olim Shalav alumni returned to OLEI following an initial project with a Taglit group from Argentina, giving the center a makeover and creating a welcoming hub for Latin Olim. Final touch-ups are underway, with Café Ivrit and movie nights already in the works

For teenage volunteers, getting to know Israel means more than seeing the sights. It’s about stepping into local communities, meeting people, getting your hands dirty, and making a real difference.

Yahel Social Change Fellowship coordinator Jesse joined Camp Ramah volunteers at the Ganei Aviv Community garden in Lod, where they spent the day planting, weeding, and giving back to the local community.

This is what it means to experience Israel from the ground up.

Introducing the Facilitator's Toolbox.

Created in partnership with Repair the World, this new resource is designed to help educators and facilitators create meaningful Jewish service learning experiences.

The toolbox brings together opening reflections, issue area education, Jewish learning, and closing reflections to help volunteers connect their service to larger questions about community, responsibility, and social change.

Drawing on the combined experience of Yahel Israel and Repair the World, the Facilitator's Toolbox supports leaders in creating service experiences that are thoughtful, engaging, and rooted in relationship-building and learning.

Service is about what we do, but it’s also about what we learn, who we meet, and how we grow.
