East Jerusalem Hospitals Network
(EJHN)
Background:
The East Jerusalem Hospitals Network (EJHN) was established in 1997 under the leadership and guidance of the late Feisal Husseini, with the strategic vision of unifying the health facilities in East Jerusalem and emphasizing their significant role within the Palestinian health system. The EJHN comprises six facilities including Makassed Islamic Charitable Hospital, Augusta Victoria Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital, Red Crescent Society Hospital, and the Jerusalem Princess Basma Center for Disabled Children. In 2003, the EJHN began efforts to officially institutionalize the Network as the first hospital network in East Jerusalem and Palestine. The work focused on developing its institutions, improving the quality of the services provided and assuring a continuum of care. East Jerusalem Hospitals continue to serve as the main centers for specialized care within the Palestinian health system. Patients needing services and procedures that are not available in the West Bank and Gaza are referred for treatment in the EJHN facilities by the Palestinian Ministry of Health. On average, over 70% of the EJHN patients are referred from the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. As such, EJHN plays a critical role in providing health services to the Palestinian people. In 2016, over 25,000 West Bank and Gaza patients were referred by MoH to East Jerusalem, representing more than 40% of all MoH referrals, and more than two-thirds of the EJHN caseload. In addition, EJHs represent the main training hub in Palestine, with more than 150 resident doctors doing 2-6 years training in 12 specialities every year, together with hundreds of medical students, nurses and technicians. Over the last three years, five East Jerusalem Hospitals have obtained Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation, which is an international certification of achieving very high standards of patient quality and safety. These hospitals are the first in Palestine to achieve this goal. The EJHN Quality, Safety and Continuous Education committees meet regularly to share information and lessons learnt in implementing the Joint Commission requirements and upgrade the overall standards.
