While Thanksgiving may be a holiday unique to the USA, its core represents something the entire world desperately needs today: gratefulness.
It’s the absence of gratitude that often gives rise to unchecked entitlement. Entitlement, in turn, creates fertile ground for blindness effectively blinding us to the struggles and humanity of others. In this blindness, we descend into ignorance, where we destroy what we fail to understand. From the barren fields of ignorance, we cultivate destructive criticism, tearing down anything that dares to grow, thrive, or make a meaningful difference. And it is from this place of destruction, that we selfishly rebuild, only to perpetuate the cycle all over again.
Consider with me that if this is ever going to change it will very likely begin with gratitude - thankfulness for the very differences that make us unique. It will shift when we can appreciate our neighbors, even when they don’t look, think, or live like we do. It will transform when we strive to see others as God sees them, to feel for creation as He does - not just our preferred corner of it, but the whole.
So, whether today finds you carving a turkey, sharing hummus and falafel, or savoring a burger, let’s all take a moment to pause and consider what it would mean to live every day from a place of genuine gratitude.
Happy Gratefulgiving, everyone!
