Located in the heart of Ramat Gan, the College is a recognized institution of higher education serving more than 3,000 students, with nearly 250 members of academic faculty. Its academic programs span three major areas: Health Sciences, Technology, and the Social Sciences, bringing together students and scholars from across the diverse communities that make up Israeli society.

In just 27 days, the Association for Israel Studies will gather at Ramat Gan Academic College ( האקדמית רמת-גן ) for the 42nd Conference of the Association for Israel Studies, taking place October 19–21, 2026.

For more than 40 years, the Association for Israel Studies (AIS) has brought together an international and interdisciplinary community of scholars dedicated to the academic study of Israel. Founded in 1985, AIS connects researchers across the social sciences and humanities and provides a space for scholarship, discussion, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas about Israel—past and present.

This year’s conference will explore the theme:

“Security, Rehabilitation and Healing – What’s Next?”

Over three days, scholars from a wide range of disciplines will come together to examine questions of security, recovery, society, culture, technology, politics, history, health, international relations, and much more.

On behalf of the Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, Southern Methodist University:

The Department of Religious Studies in Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences at Southern Methodist University invites applications for a non-tenure-track position in Jewish Studies at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor. The position requires residency in Dallas beginning August 1, 2027. The position is renewable after three and/or five years with the possibility of promotion. The teaching load is three classes in each of the fall and the spring semesters.

Department of Religious Studies: The Department of Religious Studies at SMU is a dynamic, exceptionally collegial group of researchers and teachers with intellectual breadth that spans the globe, multiple academic disciplines, and several thousand years of history. Our research has been recognized with numerous fellowships, grants, and awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Templeton Foundation grant, and several national and international book awards. Faculty in the department are also dedicated to undergraduate and graduate teaching and have been recognized multiple times at the university, national, and international levels.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. or ABD in Jewish Studies or related field. Ability to teach undergraduate courses, both introductory and advanced, on a wide range of topics in Jewish Studies and direct the Jewish Studies program (currently a minor).

Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in hand by the time of appointment. Expertise in some facet of Judaism/Jewish life. Competence to teach an introductory course in Jewish Studies as well as upper-level classes in Jewish history, culture, experience, religion, etc. Ability to direct a Jewish Studies minor in the department and perform relevant administrative duties including course scheduling, recruiting, advising minors, and event programming. Capacity to contribute to the Graduate Program in Religious Studies.

Who was the ideal “national Jew”? Why did some of the leading figures of Zionism envision an aristocratic—even monarchical—government at the helm of their utopian Jewish state? And why did the figure of the farmer become so central to the Zionist movement?

Peasants, Sons of Kings: Class Perspectives in Early Jewish Nationalism explores the influence of social ideas on Jewish nationalism in general and on Zionism in particular during its formative decades. Focusing on writings and major events from 1881 to 1904, Burns examines how national ideas were shaped by perceptions of class and how social aspirations came to be articulated in national terms.

Rhona Burns is a postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University, where she is also a researcher and lecturer. Her research focuses on the intellectual history of Jewish nationalism. She has served as a co-editor of Eruvin, edited the weekend magazine of The Jerusalem Post, and taught in Jerusalem. She is the author of two books of poetry and has published numerous stories, poems, and essays in newspapers, literary journals, and other publications.
