Synopsis:
On a summer day in 1945, an Orthodox man and his grown son return to a village in Hungary while the villagers prepare for the wedding of the town clerk’s son. The townspeople – suspicious, remorseful, fearful, and cunning – expect the worst and behave accordingly. The town clerk fears the men may be heirs of the village’s deported Jews and expects them to demand their illegally acquired property back.

About the Author:
Hungarian novelist, essayist, and editor-in-chief of Szombat, a Jewish political and cultural monthly. He has published several novels, collections of short stories, and a book of poetry. His works have been translated in several languages. Kafka macskái (Kafka’s Cats) has been translated into Turkish, Italian and Czech; Europa Symphony into Finnish, Turkish, with the English edition forthcoming. His short story collection 1945 és más történetek (1945 and Other Stories) has been translated into English, Italian, Finnish, Chinese and Slovakian.

University of Haifa offers research-track position, Department of Communications

The Department of Communication at the University of Haifa invites applications for an open-rank tenure-track position in communication studies, beginning in October 2027. The Department seeks outstanding candidates in all areas of communication research, with particular interest in the priority areas listed below. Rank will be determined according to the candidate’s academic qualifications. The position is subject to budgetary/funding approval and to the University’s standard approval procedures.

The Department offers single and double major B.A. programs in communication studies, a research M.A. and Ph.D. programs, an M.A. program in Strategic Communication and Public Relations, and an M.A. program in Information and Knowledge Management. Faculty in the
Department study the meanings, effects, and social, cultural, and technological contexts of communication in an age of rapid technological and cultural change, using a variety of methodological approaches.

Application Requirements:
The Department invites applications from candidates who have completed their Ph.D. in May 2020 or later, have completed or will complete a postdoctoral fellowship by September 2027, and have
not yet held an academic appointment at a university in Israel. While a Ph.D. in communication is preferred, candidates with training in related fields who have published in leading communication journals will also be considered. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate excellence in research
and teaching, develop an independent research agenda, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, supervise graduate students, and pursue external research funding.

Visiting Professor from Israel

The Department of Government at Dartmouth College invites applications for a Visiting Professor from Israel to conduct research and teach in the department during the 2027–28 academic year. Candidates who are pursuing research and teaching related to Israel’s domestic
politics or foreign/security relations, broadly construed, are particularly encouraged to apply.

The appointment is for 1 or 2 terms during any of Dartmouth’s four 10-week quarters. The successful candidate will teach 1 undergraduate course, related to Israeli politics, for each academic term in residence. Ideally applicants will have experience teaching a version of the
proposed course. The visiting professor will give a public lecture while at Dartmouth. The candidate’s research and teaching interests would ideally position them to develop productive relationships with faculty and postdoctoral fellows in Dartmouth’s intellectual community.

Franklin & Marshall College invites applications for the Robert F. and Patricia G. Ross Weis Professorship in Judaic Studies and History, a joint appointment in the Program in Judaic Studies and the Department of History beginning August 2026. Appointment is for nine months (August - May) and is not subject to renewal. The rank will be Visiting Assistant Professor or Visiting Instructor, depending on qualifications. Qualifications:

The University of Oklahoma Israel Studies Graduate Student Workshop
February 15-18, 2027

Call for Submissions:
Transnational experiences are vital to the historian’s profession. Encounters with colleagues and mentors from different countries and from different academic traditions broadens our scholarship and allows us to develop valuable career networks.

For aspiring historians from Israel there is an expectation that, to be able to have successful careers in Israel, they must first publish in English language journals and have acquired experience at North American or European universities. Moreover, many Israeli-trained academics spend shorter or longer periods developing their careers abroad, which necessitates an understanding of the publishing culture in different countries along with the ability to write books and articles of an exceptional caliber in languages other than Hebrew and Arabic.

In an effort to advance the international reach of a new generation of Israeli scholars, this workshop will bring up to eight Ph.D. students from Israeli universities for a short-term residency at the Schusterman Center for Judaic and Israel Studies at the University of Oklahoma (OU). The students will stay at the OU
campus for five days, with two of those days dedicated to the workshop. On the first day of the program the students will present an original English language article on their research, and they will receive feedback from faculty mentors and peers. On the second day of the program the students will meet with journal and university press editors as well as with other scholars to gain perspectives on professionalization of historians in the American academy.

The 2027 workshop is open to any Ph.D. candidates from Israeli universities whose work is on the history of the Land/State of Israel.

All accepted applicants will receive:
• Travel to and from Israel to The University of Oklahoma
• Room and board for 5 days at the University of Oklahoma
• Special events and dinners with local graduate students and faculty
• $1000.00 Honorarium
