Our volunteer Lynne has made her regular 3 monthly visit to the Neve Yosef Centre in Haifa to discuss the Talia Trust project with the teachers.
There are 2 small groups of children who meet for an hour twice a week after their day in their local primary schools. One of the teachers, Sarah, commented that despite the prolonged break because of the war situation, she felt the children had not gone backwards (which is often the case) but returned at the same level as before.
There is a continuing problem of late attendance (because of gathering the children from area) and the late hour (4-5 p.m.) can adversely affect focus and discipline. However, despite these issues the teachers note that progress is being made during the year.
This progress is very important as it enables these children to continue in school with greater confidence. Also they have acquired skills in how to approach reading effectively.

ישנן שתי קבוצות קטנות של ילדים שנפגשות פעמיים בשבוע למשך שעה לאחר סיום הלימודים בביה"ס היסודי. שרה, אחת המורות שלנו, דיווחה שלמרות הניתוק הארוך מהלימודים בגלל המלחמה, היא לא הרגישה נסיגה אצל התלמידים, אלא חזרו לאותה רמה שבה היו קודם לכן.
עדיין יש בעיה מתמשכת של איחורים למפגש (עד שהילדים נאספים מהסביבה ). כמו כן, השעה המאוחרת (בין 4 ל-5 אחה"צ) משפיעה לרעה על יכולת הריכוז והמשמעת. אולם, למרות הבעיות הנ"ל, המורים מרוצים מההתקדמות השנתית. ההתקדמות חשובה ביותר קודם כל ברכישת בטחון עצמי ובהרגשת מסוגלות לעמוד בפני אתגרים. ושנית, בגישה חיובית לכישורי הקריאה שלהם.
