We are a group of 30 committed volunteers, united by a shared belief in the power of community and the drive to create meaningful change.

Bungoma Outreach Project |
Empowering communities in Bungoma, Kenya by constructing a safe home for teen mums, renovating school roofs and floors, expanding access to clean water, and supporting sustainable local farming initiatives. Though we come from different walks of life, we’re connected by one purpose: to stand in solidarity with the people of Bungoma County, Kenya. This October, we’ll make the journey — not as outsiders offering solutions, but as partners ready to listen, learn, and work side by side. Together with local communities, we’ll support teenage mothers, orphaned children, and schoolchildren facing real and urgent challenges. Our mission is simple: to make a real difference. Through this project, we will:

🏠 Help build safe, dignified housing for young mothers.
🛠 Renovate orphanages and schools in need of repair.
🚿 Provide clean drinking water and sanitation through water tanks.
🧸 Create safe play spaces and cribs so young mums can focus on learning.
🌱 Support local farming initiatives that empower long-term change. This page will be our space to share updates, fundraising goals, stories, and milestones. We’d love for you to join us, cheer us on, support us, sponsor us, and participate in this project.

At the Bungoma Outreach Project, we work alongside communities in Bungoma, Kenya, to create practical, lasting change, from providing safe housing for young mothers and improving school facilities to expanding access to clean water and supporting sustainable community initiatives. 💜💛

But none of this would be possible without our incredible .

Meet Marc Stafford.
Originally from Clongeen, Marc is married to Emma and is a proud dad to their teenage daughter, Chloe. Away from work, you’ll usually find him at a GAA match, at the races, or enjoying a good point-to-point.

With 20 years’ experience in roofing and carpentry, he's run his own business for the past 13 years. That wealth of practical experience, along with his willingness to get stuck in, made him a fantastic addition to the Bungoma team in 2025.

The opportunity to travel to Bungoma came about when a few local lads were going. Volunteering abroad was something he had always wanted to do, so when the chance came along, he didn’t hesitate.

Looking back on that first trip, Marc describes it as “an experience I will never forget.” He says it was incredibly humbling, and he felt grateful to be part of such a great group of people, all working hard together to make even a small difference.

What stayed with him most, though, was the people he met and worked alongside in Bungoma. In his own words, they were “some of the nicest, happiest and most humble people I’ve ever met.” The experience was a real eye-opener, and he is already looking forward to meeting and working with them again.

That first trip clearly left its mark, and he is now looking forward to returning to Bungoma, reconnecting with the community and once again putting his skills to good use alongside another great volunteer team.

💚 The Bungoma Project: Impact Goes Both Ways
Some journeys are made even more special by the people we share them with. ❤️

In our latest lookback video, we hear from Doireann O'Brien and her dad, Sean, who travelled to Bungoma together for an experience neither will ever forget.

For this father and daughter, it was a precious opportunity to spend time together, working side by side to make a difference in the lives of others.

But as so often happens in Bungoma, they came away with so much more than they expected.
Surrounded by an incredible community and a wonderful team of volunteers, they found inspiration in the warmth, kindness, generosity and spirit of the people they met.

A journey of a lifetime, made all the more meaningful by sharing it together.

Because sometimes we set out to change the lives of others, only to discover how deeply those experiences change our own.

Meet Monica Gaynor.

Monica is married to Richie and is a very proud mum to three wonderful children, Michael, Rachel and Sarah. She works with Wexford County Council, and when she has time for herself, she loves travelling, dancing, walking, and, most of all, catching up with family and friends.

Helping others and volunteering have always been important to Monica, so when she first heard about her sister, Rosie Keary's work with the Bungoma Outreach Project, she knew she wanted to be part of it.

Last year, Monica travelled to Bungoma and had the opportunity to support children and families within the community. What made the experience even more special was sharing it with her daughter and her sisters, while also forming wonderful friendships with the brilliant group of volunteers who travelled alongside them.

Monica says: “It was such a humbling and rewarding experience, and I loved every minute of it. The people, the children, the friendships and the whole experience really stayed with me, and I knew I would love to return.”

And return she will. 💜

Monica is so excited to head back to Bungoma in 2027 to reconnect with the people she met, continue supporting the projects already making such a difference, and once again play her part in helping children and families in the community.

For Monica, being able to volunteer, give something back and share in something so special is an opportunity she feels incredibly lucky to have.

We are absolutely delighted to have Monica return to Bungoma, bringing with her the same warmth, kindness, energy, and willingness to get involved that made her such a valued part of the team last time. 💜💛

💜💛The Bungoma Project: Impact Goes Both Ways

We often talk about the difference the Bungoma Project makes to the communities we work alongside. But we don't always talk about how deeply the people of Bungoma touch the hearts and lives of our volunteers.

Over the coming weeks, we're turning the camera around to share the stories of our volunteers, not just what they did in Bungoma, but what Bungoma did for them. ❤️

First up is Denis Moynihan!

Denis is one of those wonderful people who can turn his hand to just about anything. Alongside his teammates, he helped replace dusty earthen floors in school classrooms to tackle the serious problem of jiggers, tiny parasitic fleas that can cause painful wounds and infections, sometimes making it difficult for children to walk or even attend school.

It was practical, hands-on work that helped make classrooms safer and healthier places for children to learn.

But for Denis, the experience was about so much more than the work itself.

What stayed with him most was the people. Their warmth, their kindness, their welcome and their incredible spirit.

Denis describes his time in Bungoma as truly humbling. He went there to lend a hand, but came home having gained something far greater than he ever expected.

And that's something so many of our volunteers discover. You arrive hoping to make a difference in someone else's life, only to find that the people you meet have made an unforgettable difference in yours.

Sometimes the greatest gift of volunteering is what you receive, rather than what you give. 💚

Because the Bungoma Project isn't just about the difference we make. It's about the difference Bungoma makes in us. ❤️

Meet Ella Ryan Music

Originally from West Cork and now living in Wexford, Ella is a post-primary teacher, singer-songwriter, traveller and motorsport enthusiast, with an impressive 16 years’ experience in the sport. She has recently stepped into a media role with Flying Finn Motorsport and the Triton Showers National Rally Championship.

Ella’s passion for volunteering began in 2015 in Nalweyo, Uganda, where she taught English, Music and Sport. During her time there, she also helped create a music video that went viral and raised funds for the local high school.

With a love of travel, music, sport and working with young people, joining the Bungoma Outreach Project felt like a natural next adventure. Ella is looking forward to travelling to Kenya this February, meeting the local community, sharing her skills and playing her part in making a positive difference.

There is another fairly big adventure happening at home too, as Ella and fellow volunteer Robbie are trying to find time to plan their wedding! 💍😂

And with Kenya set to become country number 70 for Ella, it’s safe to say her adventures are far from over. 🇰🇪 🌍

We are delighted to have Ella join the Bungoma team, and we know she will bring plenty of creativity, energy, music, and enthusiasm to the journey. 💜💛

💚 The Bungoma Project Update: Progress at EstherMichele House! 🏡

There's plenty happening behind the scenes in Bungoma, even before our volunteers arrive!

Work is progressing at EstherMichele House, with the local team busy getting everything ready for our volunteers to transform the newly built house into a safe, welcoming and nurturing home for mums and their babies. ❤️

🪟 Window frames are now in place, ready for the glass to be fitted, bringing us another step closer to a finished home.

💧 Water pipes are being installed, providing the plumbing needed to bring clean, running water into the house. Something many of us take for granted, but so important for everyday life, from toilets and showers to safe drinking water and preparing meals in the mother and baby kitchen.

💜In February, our volunteers will completely transform the house into a home for 15 teenage mothers and their babies💛

🌿 A secure perimeter wall is also in place, creating a safe outdoor space where children can play, explore and grow. When our volunteers arrive, they'll help transform the garden into a fun, stimulating and educational environment where little imaginations can flourish.

Every pipe, every window and every brick brings us closer to creating more than just a house; we are building a place of safety, dignity, opportunity and hope.

The Bungoma Project is a team effort, and the impact begins long before we arrive. 💚

Meet Robbie Mageean.

Robbie hails from Harristown, Ballymitty and is a passionate Bannow-Ballymitty GAA player. Next year will mark a very special milestone for him as he celebrates 30 years togging out for the club’s adult teams!

After two decades in the engineering industry, Robbie recently took the leap into a new career in post-primary teaching, bringing a wealth of experience and a real desire to make a difference.

His inspiration to volunteer comes from his father, Peter, who spent an incredible 20 years volunteering in Cape Town with the Niall Mellon Township Trust. Robbie always regretted not joining his dad on his final trip, so when his fiancée, Ella, introduced him to the Bungoma Outreach Project, he knew it was an opportunity he didn’t want to miss.

As a dad himself, Robbie is especially looking forward to helping children in need, supporting families facing difficult circumstances and playing his part in creating positive, lasting change. And this will be a very special journey for Robbie and Ella, as they will be travelling to Kenya and volunteering together. They are also busy planning their wedding, although finding the time between GAA, teaching, volunteering, and everything else is proving to be a challenge! 💍💜

We are delighted to have Robbie join the Bungoma team, and we know he will bring plenty of energy, practical experience, kindness, and a real willingness to get stuck in.

Meet Sean O’Brien.

Sean works as a gardener and caretaker at Mayglass Primary School, and he's happiest outdoors, meeting people and helping wherever he can. Sean had wanted to volunteer abroad for a long time, and when his daughter Doireann told him about the Bungoma Outreach Project, he decided that this was what he was waiting for! Before long, the two of them were travelling to Bungoma together as part of our 2025 volunteer team.

Sean says: “I have to say, it’s the best thing I have ever done. I can’t wait to go back in 2027 with another great team and reunite with the wonderful people of Bungoma.”

For Sean, the experience was about so much more than the work itself. It was the people, the friendships, the sense of community and the opportunity to lend a hand wherever it was needed that made the trip so special. And as part of the Team, Sean will oversee projects close to his heart whilst in Bungoma next February.

We are absolutely delighted to have Sean returning with us to Bungoma. His kindness, practical nature, humour and willingness to help make him such a valued part of the team. 💜💛
