A new rule has been introduced to enable victims-survivors of domestic abuse transfer time spent on a social housing waiting list to another local authority.

The update was announced today to support people experiencing domestic, sexual and gender-based violence who need to move for their safety.

This is an important step to help ensure that those fleeing abuse do not lose their place on a housing list when they have to leave their local area due to fear.

Under this change, you should now be able to:

🟣 Transfer your time on a social housing waiting list to another local authority.
🟣 Keep your original application date.
🟣 Request flexibility around local connection rules in some cases.

This change aims to remove barriers for those who need to relocate quickly to stay safe and has been a key ask from Women’s Aid and others working to support victims-survivors of domestic abuse.

Women’s Aid welcome this as a positive step and hope it marks the beginning of a fully domestic violence-informed approach to housing, which is urgently needed as part of a whole-of-government response to domestic, sexual and gender-based violence.
