A big thank you to Edie, who joined us today, delivering on one of our Gorey routes. A fantastic young lady, who visited us from Dublin to help out - an absolute legend! We love when the younger generation supports us and our service users really appreciate seeing her great smile at the door. Edie delivered on the Gorey B route with style, managing the delivery book. and ensuring the accompanying senior volunteers completed the job successfully

📱 𝗜𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗧𝗶𝗸𝗧𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸?

A teenager may think they are sharing a video with other TikTok users — but a public account can make their content visible far beyond the app.

The European Commission has issued preliminary findings that TikTok’s arrangements for minors’ accounts may not meet the safety standards required under the Digital Services Act.

The Commission says that when a minor chooses a public account:

🌍 Their content may be viewed by people who do not have a TikTok account

🔎 Their videos may be shared or found outside the platform

📲 Content posted by 16- and 17-year-olds may be recommended to other users through the For You Feed

The Commission believes minors’ content should, by default, only be visible to TikTok users accepted by the young person. It also says minors’ content should not be accessible to a global audience outside TikTok or recommended to strangers through the For You Feed. These findings are not yet a final decision, and TikTok has an opportunity to respond.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸?

Sit down with your teenager and open:

Profile → Menu ☰ → Settings and privacy → Privacy

Then check:

🔒 Is the account public or private?

TikTok says accounts belonging to 13- to 17-year-olds are private when first created, but teenagers can change this setting. On a public account, videos may be visible and shareable by anyone on or off TikTok and may appear on search engines, blogs or other social media sites.

👥 Who can follow them and view each post?

Even with a private account, review the followers list together. Check the audience selected before each new video is posted.

💬 Who can comment or send messages?

For public accounts belonging to 16- and 17-year-olds, comments may be open to everyone by default. Review who can comment, send message requests or tag the account.

⬇️ Can other people download or reuse their videos?

Check video downloads, Duet, Stitch and other reuse settings. A public account may allow content to be downloaded, copied or incorporated into another user’s video, depending on the settings chosen.

🔎 Can TikTok suggest their account to others?

Review Suggest your account to others and whether contacts or Facebook friends have been synchronised. Previously synchronised contacts may also need to be removed separately.

𝗔 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲.

TikTok says a user’s nickname, username and profile photograph remain visible to anyone, even when the account is private.

The aim is not simply to tell teenagers to stop using social media. It is to help them understand that their real audience may be much larger than the people who follow them.

💼 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗦𝗨𝗦𝗜 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁?

A summer job does not automatically mean a lower student grant.

For the 2026/27 academic year, SUSI may deduct up to €8,830 of eligible earnings received by the applicant from employment outside term time. SUSI calls this the Holiday Earnings deduction.

𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵:

❌ Any money a student earns during the holidays automatically reduces their SUSI grant.

𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁:

✅ Eligible holiday earnings may be removed from the household’s reckonable income calculation, up to the maximum deduction of €8,830.

✅ The earnings must still be declared on the SUSI application.

✅ If applying for 2026/27, SUSI generally assesses income received during 2025. This means money earned from a summer job in 2026 would not normally form part of the income assessment for the 2026/27 application.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘆?

The deduction applies to employment income earned by the applicant outside normal term time, including during:

🐣 Easter holidays
☀️ Summer holidays
🎄 Christmas holidays

The applicant must have been in education while earning the holiday income. For full-time students, the course being applied for must also be an approved full-time course.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗨𝗦𝗜 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿?

📄 Payslips showing when the income was earned

📄 A completed Holiday Earnings Form signed and stamped by the employer, where payslips are unavailable

📄 Confirmation from the school or college where work took place during dates that may normally fall within term time, such as May or September

SUSI says it will request supporting documents where declaring Holiday Earnings could improve the applicant’s grant assessment.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗶𝘁:

Do not leave the income off the application. Declare the applicant’s full earnings and provide the Holiday Earnings information so SUSI can decide what deduction applies.
