Westport Action for Youth

Westport Action for Youth The council attributes the decline of the playground to vandalism by youths.

We are residents of Westport who have come together to advocate for the development of our town centre playground and green space (Leisure Park) into a Community Park for all to use. Community Park Refurbishment Campaign: A Space for All

As concerned residents of Westport, we come together to advocate for the refurbishment and development of our town centre playground and green space (Leisure Par

k). Over the years, our playground has fallen into disrepair, and the surrounding green space has been left unmaintained, resulting in a decline in its usage by the community. However, this points to a larger issue: the town lacks designated spaces for young people to gather and engage in constructive activities. We believe that investing in a revitalised community park in the heart of town will not only enhance the area for all residents, but also provide a safe, welcoming space where young people can gather, play, and engage in recreational activities

This project is about more than just improving a playground. It's about creating a space that brings people together, strengthens community ties, and provides opportunities for all generations to interact in a safe and positive environment.

Well done to all those who participated today at Mayo Co Co. We may be small but together we will be heard. Today was not the response or result we wanted. However we made our best effort and we know we tried for our community and our children.

The WESTPORT ACTION for YOUTH network would like to thank all the councillors who listened, heard our call and stood up for the people of Westport. Those in attendance today were:
Harry Barrett, Joe Faughan, Richard Finn, Micheal Kilcoyne, Deirdre Lawless, John Omalley and Patsy O Brien.

We were well represented both in and outside the chamber, with a variety of independent community groups and the WAY network of parents a big thank you to you. 👏

🌿 Silent Protest Against the Sale of Our Last Green Space 🌿

Today, local residents gathered in peaceful protest, standing united to defend our town’s last remaining public green space. The council’s decision to sell this vital land is not just a loss for nature, but for the community’s future.

Our Green Space, Our Future. 💚

It’s incredibly disheartening to see our councillors pushing ahead with this plan after encouraging us to consult the community, create a shared vision, and even seek local business support.

We’ve shown there’s a real need and strong desire for a free, accessible community space in our town. Yet our voices are being ignored.

If you believe in protecting spaces that belong to everyone, please contact our councillors to let them know and join us for a silent protest at Áras an Chontae, Castlebar, this Monday from 13:00 ahead of the full vote on the proposal from 14:00.
