Ballina Athletic Club are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our clubmate and dear friend, Mattie Coleman.
Mattie was a hugely respected and much loved member of our club for many years. An inspiring and dedicated Masters athlete, he proudly represented Ballina AC across track, road and cross country, always competing with determination, humility and great sportsmanship. Over the past number of years he achieved notable success at national level, earning multiple medals at Indoor and Outdoor Masters Championships, particularly in the 800m. He also embraced the challenge of major road races including the Dublin City Marathon and the Chicago Marathon, performances that reflected his commitment and love for the sport.
Beyond his achievements, Mattie will be remembered most as a true gentleman. He gave back a huge amount to his community in a quiet and unassuming way, never looking for recognition or praise. In 2017, he organised a once-off “Blood for Life” 12K Run in association with Lionbridge and Ballina AC to promote the act of giving blood — an initiative that captured the very best of community spirit and highlighted the kind of person Mattie was. He believed in helping others and led by example.
Mattie was a true inspiration — a competitor, a volunteer, a teammate and a friend. His presence at training sessions, races and club events will be greatly missed.
Our heartfelt condolences go to all of Mattie’s family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. In particular, we offer our deepest sympathies to his wife Bernie, his daughters Laura, Sarah, and Áine, his son Brian, and the extended Coleman family.
