Boto a male grey seal, was rescued from Kilmore Quay in Co. Wexford on 2 October 2026 and admitted to ICU. He was found orphaned and underweight and was estimated to be a very young pup, with his lanugo still present. He weighed 16.10kg and had a small area of rawness on his palms and at the end of his chin. His umbilicus was less than three days old and was still bloody and wet. A big thank you to Kate M and Nicole D for helping this little pup safely into care. Boto which is a shape shifting pink river dolphin🐬🦭 as part of our ‘Legends of the Deep’ naming theme! He is curious by nature and his attempts to explore beyond the safe walls of his enclosure have thus far been unsuccessful. We can often hear him (loudly) discussing his plans for future exploration attempts with his ICU mates.

Nabia a female grey seal, was rescued from Kilmore Quay in Co. Wexford on 3 October 2026. She was found underweight and dehydrated and was estimated to be 2–4 weeks old. Her lanugo was partially present, and she had a small wound on the palm of her left front flipper. A big thank you to Kate M for helping Nabia get safely into care. Nabia is named after an ancient pre-Roman Iberian goddess associated with water and fertility as part of our ‘Legends of the Deep’ naming theme! Symbolising life, renewal and the nurturing power of nature. This sleeping beauty will not let anything wake her from her power naps. She will wake up when her herring order has been delivered directly to her doorstep.

Grey seal pupping season is in full swing! Check out this interview on Alan Corcoran's Morning Mix on South East Radio with our wonderful volunteer, Lisa Doran to hear about what happens when a seal pup needs to be rescued! A massive thank you to Julie and her husband for their assistance 🩵🦭

👉If you are out on beaches over the coming months, please watch for our flippered friends in distress and remember:

If you are out on beaches in the coming weeks, keep an eye out for pups in distress. Human activity by means of boat traffic, water sports and people with dogs on beaches can frighten away nursing mothers and inadvertently lead to pups being injured or orphaned.
Remember:
• Do not put a seal in the water. (Injured, sick & newborn pups are on land for a reason)
• Do not disturb them and observe from a minimum distance of 100m.
• Do not touch pups (human presence may lead to mothers abandoning otherwise healthy pups)
• Keep dogs on leash and children away.
• Take photos using the zoom function on your camera! (They help us determine the condition of an animal immediately, and if necessary, a rescue can be organised promptly.)
• If the pup is on its own with no mum in sight, injured or if you are unsure, contact our 24/7 Rescue Hotline for advice on 087 1955 393!

A pup's best chance of survival is with their mum. While we can provide care for these pups nothing compares to a mother caring for & nursing her & providing that essential high fat content milk, which is packed full of important antibodies that support their immune system. You can help us to reduce the number of orphaned Grey pups by sharing this important information! 🩵THANK YOU🩵
